General Morgan, the aecretary for work among negroes for the American , Home Mlaidon board, wrote from hla S headquarter* In New York proponing to divide tb# work In Cuba and Porto Hlco with the Home Muofon board of the aoiitbern Baptlat*. The New Proposition This proposition was that the nor thern rcisalou board take the mtattoo work among the negroes In those In land* and that the southern mission board take the work there among the white people. Thl* proposition waa declined by the Home Mission board of the southern Baptists on the ground that a division of the work in Cuba and Porto Rico on racial lines Is not feasible. It Is understood that the southern Baptists are willing to divide territory In the Islands with their northern brethren —but so to speak do not wish to keep house with them in their mission work. The reasons for this are set forth clearly by Dr. W. W. Landrum In the following Interview: Dr. Landrum was in his study work ing when (he journalistic intruder in; vaded his library. "I don't think unification of the northern and southern Baptists will take place,” said he, when asked his opinion. "Certainly it is a long way off. There are differences of opinion which render it Impracticable for us to keep house together, though we may and do co-operate in certain work. I will go no further In the specification of these differences of opinion than to mention one—the difference on the wo man question. Southern Baptists do not believe in preaching by women. Northern Baptists do and they encour age it. "There is nothing to prevent us from sharing the expense of mission work among the negroes and It works well— but that is co-operation, not unifica tion or joint, administration. The Case of Cuba. ‘Tu (he case or Cuba the southern Baptist home board has had in that island the most successful mission work in Spanish-Amerlcan counfries. In closed in an Iron cage, In the cathed ral of Bologna. It waa in the next century that a war arose out of shaving h king. The Archbishop of Rouen decreed that no one should wear beards, and Loui# VII. submitted lo the decreo. His wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, mocked him on his appeuranee, declaring that fie was • more like a monk than a monarch.” A bitter quarrel sprung up. and at length the marriage was dissolved, and the Queen married the Duke of Nor mandy. Stung to mortification by this proceeding. Louis declared war on the Duke, and for three centuries precious lives wrre squandered in these useless wars, upward of 3,000,000 men being ■ killed. And there is no doubt that all tills began because an Archbishop dis liked a hairy fare, because a King shaved to please him, and because a Quern looked upon him as “a monk rather than n monarch.” History tells, too, that « European war in 1089 was Indirectly due to a window in the Palace of Trianon. Louis XIV. and bis war minister, Lou vals, quarreled about the size of a window, and the King incensed the minister, bv "snubbing” him before the court. Thereupon Txnivais, saying that he would find better employment for a monarch than insulting his min isters, willfully insulted other powers, nnd brought upon Europe the >var of 1(189, between France en one side, and England, Germany, Holland and Spain on tbe other.
