Thus ended th* raid, hut an Incident which happened afterward Impressed th* occurrence more flrtnly on mv mind. On giving his word thnt he would not escape, promise never violated by these rude mountaineers, (he prisoner waa allowed the liberty of the Jail yard. On* morning he waa gone and every one thought he bad disappeared for good. The day before the trial would have come off the man. travel-stained, sick and exhausted, returned to the Jail. He had heard a late addition to the prisoners any that his bahy girl was sick, and leaving the Jail had tramped to his far off mountain home only to see his darting die. After burying her ami seeing Ills wife, the only other thing dear to him on earth, tuts* away ! from grief , he had trudged back to Atlanta to give himself up and ex plain why he had violated hie word. It Is not from choice, but It ts the result of taking up with a box of tobacco that belonged to Mr. Bus sey cf this city. The charge against Tom Is larceny from the boat—canal boat. When one of the above craft was ( tied up at the dock by Clark’s mill last afternoon Tom stepped aboard ujid re lieved the cargo of one box of chewing tobacco. He made away, but he had been seen. Later In the day a police man took, him in. tow near the Kldwell stars tn Woodlawn. Today the tobacco box is tn Lieut Gartledge’s room at police station, and Wiley is in a room at the Jail.
