According to Howard Murphy, two
drummers and old friend* met at the
Arlington last week. One of them
was sit Incorrigible praetleal Joker,
and the night before leaving Augusta
he toft a call. "Pound hard on the
door.” said he to the night clerk, for
2:30 a. m.. at his friend a room Then
he went up stairs to bod In hla own
room, chuckling over the anticipated
discomfiture of hla Diend. At 3:30
o'clock a. m. Bang! Bang! went the
fist of Andrew at th* joker’s door.
The drummer was Alarmend. The
house must be on fire, he thought.
He dressed In frantic, haste, buttoned
his pantaloons Into bis vest, put on
his shirt wrong side to. and sprinted
down to the office. Everything was
strangely quiet. "What's up?” said
he, breathlessly, to tfae clerk “ You
seem to he, for one.” growled the
clerk, waking out of a dose. “I should
say so!” retorted the drummer.
“3omeliody nearly broke down my
door Just now. What's the matter,
anyhow?” "Why, that was your call.”
said the clerk. “You ordered a call
at 2:30. didn't you?” "Yes.” said the
drummer, beginning to underatand,
"but. confound you, I ordered it for
1140.” "So you did." said the clerk
calmly, "but you made a mistake. Your
room is not 1140. but 1166. If I hadn’t
noticed It on the hook you wouldn't
have been called at all.” The drum
mer looed at him In silence for a mo
iner looked at him in silence for a
moment and then mounted the stairs.
At 2:30 the elevator is not run
ning.
