The suggestion of a contemporary to
change the nnme of Yellow Jerk to
one of lese dreaded sound by our peo
ple la of far lesa Import, now that the
other Jack, the frigid foe of the febrile
scourge will shortly remove temporar
ily the draad of yellow fever fiotn the
■tooth, than that the Federal Govern
ment. when taking charge of nlfalrv iu
Cuba, should Institute the most vigor
ous sanltutw regulations in all its cit
ies.
If yellow fever can be mustered In
the Queen of the Antilles, we need not
fear importations front the tropical
countries of Central and South Ameri
ca. We can easily watch visitors
front these countries ami effectually
quarantine them before they leave
shipboard at southern port*. Cubit,
however, overrun us It will hereafter
be by American soldiers und civilians,
will be n prolific source of dunger, un
less prompt step* are taken to cope
with the disease on the Island. With
the West Indies opened up, as it were,
to Americans, there will be more dan
ger In the future than In the past, un
less the utmost vigilance is exercised
by \be United States Government.
When the warm and rainy season ap
proaches In Cuba, thousands of Amer
icans will journey back to the state*,
In order to get Inio a better climate.
Klght here Will come the danger. The
periodical visit* of stills dread dleeaie
are a blight upon one of the fairest
sections of the south, and our wise
and beneficent government can do no
more humane and patriotic act than
U> prevent them so far as it is possi
ble.

I have alwaya contended that my
dog Pop knew a great deal and was
very Intelligent, but lie must pow take
a back seat—bench, I mean.
My friend—one of the charter mem
bers. by the way. of the old Atjania*
Club—was out hunting last fall, down
the' river somewhere, and had his
pointer dog with him.
“My dog Snapper,” said he. “acted
very strangely from the atnrt. He's a
bright dog. and lam never surprised
at anything he might do. Well, we
worked a couple of hillsides, and then
1 saw that the trouble with Snapper
was that he had not been fed that
morning. 1 dived Into my hunting coat
for my lunch, but It was not there. I
had dropped It In tbe brush. The very
Idea made me hungry myself, and I
prepared to tramp back. 1 worked up
to a little dump and there Snapper
made a magnificent point. I called him
to flush the birds, but he would not
move. Then I walked up myself and
what do you think I saw?”
“An owl," suggested the Observer.
"Pshaw!" rejoined my friend. "No,
sir; the dog was pointing my package
Of sandwiches."
"Absurd.” said one of the boys con
temptuously. “how could a dog point
beef or ham*"-
“They were not heef or ham; they
were quail sandwiches, and the keen
nose of thedog at once winded the
game odor.’’

An Epitaph For a Tramp.
He who walked th { street
Each day. unble#t—
Hero now Ills bruised feet
Are stayed at rest.
He who claimed no thing
Ftor his alone—
The grass Is green In spring
On earth his ow n.
He who scarcely might hide
His shivering form—
Safely doth he abide,
Sheltered from storm.
He who had no I oof
Save the tierce-sky—
Kest dwelt from him aloof-.
In state doth die.
He who begged his bread
From door to door
Now—when he Is dead—
Hungers no more.
Into his trembling handa
Fortune let fall
Nothing of treasure, lands—
tieath gave him all.
