The Colorado Midland strike was the consequence of “ crew being called out to take out a three- engine train. The men claimed that the company made an agreement some time ago not to run thiee-englne trains, and no crew would respond to the call. , It Is lieiieved that the trouble will be quickly adjusted. If not, a general Strike of the freight crews may be de clared. The strike now Involves about 50 men. The passenger business has not been effected. The St. Louis Southwest. At the annual meeting of the direc tors of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway company held In New York i Monday morning. Col. H..W. Fordyce declined re-election s» president for the ensuing year, and nominated Ed win Qould, who was unanimously chos en. Russel Harding, of the Great North ern Railroad company, who was elec ted vice president to succeed Edwin Gould, Is an unusually capable rail road man. George Erbeldlng was re-electerl sec retary. and George K. Warner was re elected treasurer. Briefs and Personals. General Traffic Manager Clarke, of the Greta Northern, denies the report that he is to accept service with the Lake Shore. The St. Louis, Kansas and South western railroad was sold at auction on Saturday by Master In Chancery Hi ram P. In foci. there are comparatively few titles ill Cuba that are settled so fai ns American Investment Is concerned. The titles are all mixed, and a man might Just as well buy green goods or gold bricks as to purchase the same. The prospects for the success of any American house that may happen lo establish a branch 111 Havana are ex cellent. I say Havana, because the capital, because of Us location amt general conditions, Is sure to he the clearing house of Cuban commerce In the future under American protection, as It is now under Spanish adminis tration. Many or the large houses or Havana have done more or less of a smuggling business, hut they have I ceil forced to dishonest practices through the smaller houses, which combined in a smuggling business.
