Rev. I). J. Stafford to Lecture.
Ttev. D. J. Stafford, of Washing
ton, D. C., will lecture in this city No
vember S, his subject being “Hamlet."
It will be a rare treat to hear this cel
ebrated man. whose fame has grown
preceollbly since he refused 440.1)00 of
fered him to lecture In connection
with the "Passion Play.” He was then
offered one-third of the net proceeds. ]
which would have been an enormous
reward for his services. The Washing-j
ton Post has the following to say of!
this lecture, who Is now under the
management of the Southern Lyceum
Bureau:
"On one occasion when Dr Stafford
deltved a charity lecture In the Balti
more Cathedral St is a matter of rec
ord that 2.000 people were turned away
while the building was crowded from
the vestibule to the eanetuarv.
“In personal appearance Dr. Staf
ford is extremely prepossessing. He
i« young and handsome, and seems to
possess all the qualities that go to
make up a wonderful man. He has a
marvelously sweet and powerful voice
over which he has absolute control,
arid is a master of expression. He is a
profound thinker nnd a perfect elocu
tionist, and Is graceful in all his man
ners. It has been a wonder to his
friends that Dr. Stafford In all his ser
mons and lectures has not lost some of
the fiery ardor of his. earliest days in
the work, but each of his sermons ap
pears to be fresher end more powerful.
He Is throughly in love with his work,
and no one can spend an hour In his
presence without catching the spirit
cf his enthusiasm."
