"This we can say without any bit terness against France, since we 'eel morally certain that tile good sense of your fellow countrymen will reassert Itself when the clouds of passion and prejudice now binding them have pass er] away. A Terrible FatlNty Near Rock Hill, S. C. Rock Hill, S. 0.. Nov. I—A very sad tragedy occurred near Issalie, in (hi* county. Tuesday Mat at about noon, when the houae of Dan Cure ton, colored, who llvea on William Smith’* place, was consumed l»y fire. Curelon and his wife had gone to the field to pick cotton, leaving three chil dren In the house, whose a" ■« reaper lively were six month*, four year* and six years. The latter had been quite side and wa* confined to Its bed. In one room of the houae was about a bale and a half of seed cotton. While the patents were away the house caught fire In some way unknown and before anyone could reach the place the building, with Its three occupants, was entirely consumed. It is a strange coincidence that in February last the wife of Ned Hanna was burned to death in the same house. OMAHA SHOW CLOSES. Paid Expense* and Has a Surplus ot , Spin, ooo. ' Omaha, Neb., Nov. 2.—-The exposl tlcn closed Monday night. About ">.- 000 iiersonx passed through the gates on the closing day. The enterprise proved a great success and will very llkdy he continued in some form or other next year. The most popular scheme seems to be'to make it a colo nial exposition next, In which the pro ducts of the new colonies acquired In , the, Spanish war may be exhibited, j The exposition has proved a financial ! success. A little les sthan two million dollars representes the receipts, while I the exposition cost about on*' million ' four hundred and fifty thousand dol lars. This leaves something like four husdred thousand dollars surpjus to he divided among the stockholders. The attendance was tw*o million six hundred jjnd twenty-five thousand three hun dred and ninety-eight. A large number of suits have been fil ed for damages by concessionaries, who assert that they have lost money be cause the exposition faded to keep its contract. It looks like a concerted at tack to reduce the surplus. These suits run all the way from fifteen thousand dollars, which the Wild West company wants, because the exposition gave *- the exclusive contract for exhibiting Indians, and then put on the Indian Congress, which ruined Its business, to a fifty thousand dollar damage suit which th ■ two Oriental streets want for violation of contract in various forms.
