Ice cream was first Introduced at the National Capital by Mra. Alexan der Hamilton, who had had It at her home In New York. Accord ingly guegta at the next reception were trotted to the rroxen mystery, and afforded considerable fun to the Initiated by the reluctance with which they tasted It Those from the rural districts especially eyed it auspiciously at first, and then molted each spoon ful with breath before consuming it. Their distruet was soon removed, however, and plates emptied with ra pidity. The man who made the cream was, oddly enough, named Jacksqp. who lit the early part of the present century, kept a small confectionary storo In Washington. Cold custards, which were cooled after being made, by set ting them on u cake of leg. were very fashionable, uml Jackson, at Mrs. Hamilton’s suggestion, froxe them by placing the Ingredients In a tin buck et and completely covering It with Ice. She mar ried the Crown Prince of Portugal without knowing much about him. but his sterling good qualities made her quickly fall in love with him When the tendency to stoutness first showed itself in her husband, to bis great discomfort, she determined to watch over him, believing that she could do him more good than the doc tors, as she was constantly with him. Hence she devoted herself to med.elne under the tuition of the best doctors of the country.
