Very Badly Was a l.ady By a Rodent
on Street Car.
Louisville. Nov. 10.—A woman and
•‘the terrible mouse" figured In a serio
comic act at Clay and Market street*
yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock.
The woman in the case was silting
pensively and quietly in a west-bound
Market street ear, and all was calm
and serene and ran boldly across the
floor of the car.
With me agonised shriek the fair
passenger made a dash for the door
and ran to the platform In a frantic
effort to escape at ail hazards. Mr.
John P. Duny. with four other men,
laid hold on her in their efforts to r«-
strma her from Jumping from the car
. while it was In motion. The combined
strength of the men finally succeeded
In keeping her on the platform, anil,
when a thorough search failed to re
veal the presence of the mouse, she
was finally persuaded to reenter the
car, Mr. Duffy and one of hi* com
panions forming themselves* Into a
body guard.
1 he rest of the trip was made with
out. further evidence of the dread In
truder, and when Sixth street was
reached the woman made a hurried
exit.

HIS LIFE
' Saved * Dan’s Life Who Was Covered
By Barth.
Stroudsburg, Pa., Nov. 10. —John W.
Angie, a well known retired merchant
of this town, narrowly escaped death
In a horrible manner. His long-stem
med pipe saved him from being buried
alive. A short time ago a number of
citizens concluded to pipe a portion of
the town and among those interested
in the enterprise was Angle, who owns
one of the largest residences on Main
street. Mr. Angle was examlnxig a
sewer pipe in the excavation on Orccn
street.
He sen In a stooping position, with
both hands engaged and with hi* pipe
In hi* mouth, when a quantity of earth
caved In, knocking him backward and
burying him completely. Two work
men were fortunately close at hand
and they dug with a will and rescued
him. Mr. Angle was severely bruised
about the body and cut in the face
from the heavy stones, but he man
aged to breathe through his pipe until
be was rescued by his workmen.
After he had fairly recovered his
sense? he remarked: ‘‘Where Is my
pipe?” not realizing fully that his close
companion had saved his life,

Ice cream was first Introduced at
the National Capital by Mra. Alexan
der Hamilton, who had had It at her
home In New York. Ahe used to tell
with amusement and delight how

were trotted to the rroxen mystery,
and afforded considerable fun to the

Washington. Cold custards, which
were cooled after being made, by set
ting them on u cake of leg. were very
fashionable, uml Jackson, at Mrs.
Hamilton’s suggestion, froxe them by
placing the Ingredients In a tin buck
et and completely covering It with Ice.
Kach bucket contained a quart and
was sold for one dollar, It Immediate
ly became popular and the Inventor
soon enlarged Ills store, and when he
died he left a considerable fortune. A
good many tried to follow his example
and ice cream was hawked about the
street*, being wheeled along very
much a* the hokey-pokey carta are
now, but none of them succeeed in ob
taining the flavor that Jackaon had lit
his product.
Most people do not know why the

When the tendency to stoutness first
showed itself in her husband, to bis
