"Queer thing about jugglers." said an old time vaudeville manager, the other day. to a New Orleans Timea- Democrai man. "They make their living performing feats that require a nicety of vision and a steadiness of hand that I* next to Incredible, and yet two-thirds of them are convivial fellows off the mage, and apond their leisure having a howling good time. ( I was naver able to understand how they pulled thmselves together, and that reminds me by the way of a queer little story. 1 had one of the bea: juggler* in the business tinder an engagement once. He had no sooner opened than he started on a highly ornamental spree. He did his work all right, but I got tired seeing him wan dering around with a Jag and told him I would eaneel his date at onco If he took another drink. That night he treated the audience to a few things not on the program. For Instance, a bottle slipped on? of his hand and nearly brained the orchestra leader; j then he dropped a pyramid of glasses and scattered pieces all over the par- j quet. "He wound up by letting a cannon ball roll Into the footlights and smashed eight or ten dollars worth of fancy Incandescents. When he came off I asked him as a special personal favor to get drunk again and stay drunk for the balance of the engage ment. "He said he was ready to do any thing to oblige and his subsequent performances were superb. Between times he would lie in a stupor on a trunk in his dressing room. To the F,dltor4 The Herald: Sir I have been teaching school for 15 years and yet I am not a school teacher. There is radically some thing wrong in the present “up to date" system of school teaching that Imposes on the parents of children the learning of lessons at home and In structing them away from school. It Is certainly a great burden to the par ents after a hard day's work to teach school every night. When I was a hoy I never carried a book home and went to school from 9 a. m till 4 p. ni. My teachers did not have the ap parently easy time of the present age of hearing lessons, but they taught children how to learn lncm Old School. OASTOItIA.
