POWDER IN THE STOVE.
It Explode# With Fatal Effect In an
Ohio Tow n.
Portsmouth. 0.. Nov. 23. —A borrl

Sunday morning at. 7 o'clock, which
nearly resulted in the complete exter
mination of the family of Georgo
Washington Ferguson, a laborer n tho
i Mcrrl# stone quarries. The family
j conslsla of himself, wife and seven
children, from 17 years to 3 months of
j nge. A can of powder supposed to bo
wet and useless, in the quarry
! blacksmith shop. Some rne had taken
the lid off to try the powder, and had
j poured slack cost In upon it and set It
las dA Ferguson, who lives near tho
.shop, in looking for fuel, found this
can. and. thinking it contained only
coal, took it home and emptied it Into
the cook stove.
The result was an immediate and
terrible explosion. The house, a small
frame, was scattered all over the hill
side. and the father, mother and threo
children were frightfully mangled and
burned. People living near were at
tracted by the explosion, and the cries
and rushed to the scene of the disas
ter. The family was taken to tha
County Infirmary near. One daughter.
Cynthia Ann, aged, died soon after
reaching the infiirmary.
A New Jersey centenarian committed
suicide yesterday.
