To Help Laoglay Operative* .
It baa been dated to The Herald to

the rlty thl# morning from l-angley
for the purpose of oonferring with the
leaders In the mill altuatioo In an (vi

deavor to have an organlilng commit
work among the operative*. The com

the lockout here that the merchants at
Langley had aimed »n agreement to
issue provision* to the striker* for on*

stated that the merchants told the mill
people that they reallxed that a reduc

and advised them to not accept any
cut.
Mr E L. Crsnflll and Mr. Forest Gay
went over io I.angly add Bath this
morning to work among the operatives
and ree what will be the best plan
to pursue.
The Atlanta Journal makes the etate
ment that there are 6,000 operatives
concerned in the walkout In Augusta.
This is a mistake, as there are In the
Augusta district, whlrh Includes Bath,
and Langley, are not more than 3,000
operative#.
The committee which has been rep
resenting the locked-out men In the
mill* state that they have been made
numerous offer* of assistance from
merchants of the city and others Inter

strikers. One merchant has offered a
very handsome donation. It i* stated.
The committee state that they have
not yet accepted any proffers of assist
ance. They appreciate the kind offers
made to them sed will perfect a plan
of distribution before accepting such.
A rumor is current that one of the reg
iments staNoned at the camp has of
fered to give the strikers one month's
pay, which would mean quite s sum
to the operatives and w’ould be of im
mense value to them. Whether these
rumors are true or not have not been
verified. At any rate expressions of
sympathy for the strikers are heard on
all sides.
Another rumor that Is being circula

operatives who walked out hove not
received their pay. In Justice to the

Three Nation*.
Year* ago these three nation* were

Chinese law and eustom should have
ebsolutely nothing at all to do wfth
this territory. The foreigners dwell

•"Well." continued the doctor, "for a
time there wns some friction, but today
from the three thousand people on the

The Cause of It.
Now as to the cause, the marrow of
the whole subject: China was very
complacent; she thought that she pos

all the nations beyond her horizon
were heathens; but now sh? has dis
covered her mistakes, and her errors,
and is casting off her lethargy. It has
not been a question of nationality

the West—the white race agains the

Dr. Allen then stated that he should
