order to meet the country schedule. Of
course the village mllto have every ad
vantage. They pay no city tuxes,

and plentiful. When the Augusta mid

that they were forced to do this in or

that they cannot exist with the sime
pay that is given In GvlfTin nnd Spar
tanburg. Tn the city living is higher
and living is more complex and expen

has a nii!e cottage and a plot of ground
around his house to cultivate. He can
have a garden and keep a cow to as

city operative is shut up In the close

This contest will be watched with
Interest. Northern spinners sav that the
mill men have made a mistake in pre

may raise a labor contest about their
heads which will interfere with cotton
spinning in the south.—Savannah

The Dead Day.
i The argent and tmpprtel day
For all hi* wealth was made to yield.
I He passed hla gate* ml palms and lay
Far nut upon hi* battered shield—
calm and kingllke, with red gar
ment* rolled
I in blood and gleaming bumtobments of .
gold.
The queculy Night came down and j
swathed
The king in anmiter vestments new:
She bow*d her face above and bathed j
Hl* eyes In darktioa* and In dew.
And closed and kissed them aoftlv na j
she slid
Aside the dead klng'a allvered euffln ltd.
flume star-tip cagilleS foot and head. '
Sweet perfume* of the perfumed sea.
And then above her C ifflned dead
She drew great curtain* lov-lnalv.
And, as *h>- hoohed them on the bent
mmin’s hotn,
; Unloosed her Imir and mourned and
mourned till morn.
