Ctoe had rrcentlf been rap ,ur,,i by the St. P*»'. and from her R •as Uarn -d that others were soon ex pected. By this method the Merrimar would approach by night fn»m the eaatward; when about live mile# she 1 would be discovered by the blockading 1 veaaeta, searchlight* would be thrown 1 inward bar., and 6re opened, rare be ing taken to lire wide and throw Me lights in front and on the aide*, to show the splash of aU.sing projertlle*. The Merrimac. upon discovery, would 1 bear in toward shore lo within about jtwo tbcuaand yard#. apr»' -M > ,, ! r io seek the shelter of batteries: she would Throw pitch on the fires to mske heavy i black smoke, as If forcing to the ut -1 most. She would head In toward the entrance nnd turn full down the course for entering the channel, hlriw iug her whistle in blast* as of fright and distress. The searchlight would Dash across and show a Spanish flag at her peak. On f.pprcachlng the light* would be thrown on the entrance io facilitate her navigation, but carefully avoiding resting upon her. The shore batteries opening on the chasing vessel would he re-'lied to and kept diverted If they opened on the Merrimac. seach i lights would be thrown in the gunners face*. However, an examination of th? chart shooed the difficulties of naviga tion to be so gr -at that no ssne ean -1 tain would attempt to tnk« In a collier 1 8 t night or under circumstances that did not admit of the utmost delibera tion. It was shown that tugs were used by single screw vessels of any size on aecount of the turn in the channel abreast Estrella Point. (See map, page 271.) The chances seemed to be against ithe enemy's being deceived, and navi gHiion depending upon searchlights would entail chances of failure. This plan and various other plans involving the co-operation cf the fleet were discarded in favor of the simnler plan of going in alone by moonlight, just before the moon should set. Sur prise, under any condition, could be j only partial at best, since a certain ! amount of light was absolutely neces sary for navigation. The conditions for surprise would be more favorable toward daybreak. Moreover, a fleor,- tlde must be chosen, so that, in case of breaking the anchor gear, the vessel would he set in th# channel and have ample time for itching before the -tb fduid =mi4 to throw her c,vH. while the chances of being carried by the tide through the whole length of the nar row channel into the inner harbor seemed improbable.
