peace agreement between the United
States and Spain ts exported to be a
further search for tbc culprits In the
Maine disaster. Answers to inquiries
made at Paris and Madrid indicate that
the Spaniards are curious to know th~
solutlon of the question "Who blew up
the Maine?" and believe that investi
gation now wtfl remove any lingering
American suspicion of complicity on im
part of the Spanish government In the
explosion. The Spaniards think that
further inquiry will possibly involve
the Cubans. However, they are not go
ing to assist In finding the parties guil

beneath their dignity.

A Well Known Augustan Passes
Away.
The announcement of the death of
Mr. James T. McGran will be learned
with sincere regret by th- rrdmy friend*
of this most excellent gentleman.
Mr. McGran had up to a few weeks
ego been in perfect health: about two
. weeks since he wa* stricken with pa
ralysis. Careful treatment and tender
nursing wa* given him. but without ef
fecj, and. this morning, surrounded by
his loved ones, his spirit passed peace
.fully away to the Great Beyond.
Mr. McGran tvas connected tclth the
Augusta Brick company Ho was elx
ty-three years of age, and unmarried.
He was well known as one of Augusta's
most honored citizens, a man of ster
ling worth and integrity, dignified,
courtly and chivalrous, a gentleman o?
the old school, a type that 1* rapidly
passing away.
He was *. brother of Mrs. Kerr Boyce,
of this city, and of Mrs. Joel Goodlet.
of Spartanburg, to whom is extended
th# sympathy of many friends in their
sad bereavement.

Wreck on the Southern
The Southern train due here this
morning at eight o'clock, wa* five hours
