The War De partment ba* In contemplation two big tranaporta now being fitted out at Cramp'* for the conveyance of troop* on the Pacific coast. It ia poasibit* that when they served the purpose of ronveying the permanent garrison* to Cuba they will be despatched to Man ila by way of the Sue* canal. , in aiirb case they will take several thousand regulars to replace the vol urttvrs there. After that the Missis sippi, and a slater ship, will ply be tween Manila and Ban Francisco, sup plementing this rervice transport ser vice nr w operated by Ihe government. They r-n easily be spared from the Atlantic coast after the Cuban garri sons S'c once established In view of the small demands for transportation in that quarters as compared with the prospective demands In th* Philip pines. Perhaps the Public May Peep. Of all the city houses In this country perhaps the four Vanderbilt mansions in Fifth avenue are the most familiar In appearance to the general public, says a New York paper. The brown stone twins across the corner from St. Patrick's cathedral are thought by many good judges to be the most per fect type of a great city house that can he found In New York. One of these hout'« belong to Mr. George Vander bilt and the other belongs to Mrs. Sloane, formerly Miss Vanderbilt. For months the Slnane bouse has been hooded In canvas, and the passersby have been wondering what Is going on. The casual observer will really never know what has been done be hind those canvas screens. A few taken out of the wall and filled • iPtth great stained giees windows and ihr rechiseling of the great, carved stone work will be about all that he will see; and yet a million dodars w II not pay for all the-work that ia being done, and whtn finished Mrs. Sloane’s house will be a palace worthy to rank with the great house of Cor nelius Vanderbilt a little farther u» the a venae. If Mrs. 3!ouh*'s hau*e U us be Taken aa an InScation of the trend of'fashion in architecture, then Uh CtWTJi A THE AUGUSTA HERALD. mirr %«. • ‘Than am mama ><k*f *aw»*« k* ***** aat* >♦ k*»* *»•• tk* fww **'*“*• # i#»* ## * * *m Nf ###*» # w## §0 %#* A* §# <V •* I ***** a**k« kWWk* Ik** am Hawk 1 IT** M**n>*M pwM'ri * *»*«*»'•? *»■ [imlmh *h# ikswa *1 ik* i*«*»y. fk» I* |r*#ts 4a* »* *k* »*>■—*! at tk* ik»*» mm Hn> v#if •%# •rut m Kk 9m Hsi"iiiM**y t* Ik* **•*•• I* gwk | til# inrY-' f# iVi i #"i# |>##* I •»*♦## I# ill#* m4v pff tVi I tv# mm** ’Vir ***' lirikartkM* k*a**Nla* <• Ik* aaaiomWkg Inf Ik* N*M*yw y*M»f4*V PkW** I k«*t*w ik*« k**s»ai*4 a *••*» <><**.* I ***4*4 p»*'l**i M whktk Ik* 4*a*t*t4* 1 la»«k*4 Ik* x swkkr** *f Ik* MktM* .(.;*! New York as well as the other American cities now has many hous es which, both for the magnificence of their interior* and for the tiea*- urea of art they contain, are quite as well worth seeing as some of the for eign palaces. Therefore It la a very welcome whisper that la being circula ted to the effect that some of these houses will be opened occas'onally and that visitors properly accredited will be admitted on the payment of a small fee. The fee would be turned over to some charitable purpose Lucky In deed would be the object selected to ! benefit by this new departuie!
