An Open letter to Mr Stewart Phln
lay. President of the Augusta Mill: 1
My Dear Sir: They tell us that yon
sre going to shut down our mill. This
seems mighty .(range to us. You cut
our wages a few week* ago and we
wrnt to our wo”h without a word, we |
never struck and we haven't talked of :
' striking.
| The people oh Weal End went on a
I strike, hut we don't see what that haa
to do with the Augusta mill. They are
not our brothers and sister*, and why
should you want to lock u# out be
-1 cause they went out on a strike. You
told us to go to work and organise and :
yet tbe South Carolina mills organised
and get them to raise wage* and you I
would give us 6 per cent more than
they were get ting.
We have gone to work and organized
and are Just beginning to get In a posi
tion to lay the matter before our tia
tlonal officer* of going to South Caro
lina anil organizing them there when
we are told that yon are going to shut
us out because the West End mills are
not running.
Mr. Phlnlzy, we did not think that
you would do this way after wo went
bark to work when you said you had
Ito cut wages we thought you was sln
jerre. We believed you were doing the
right tiling by us, but, O Ood! It seems
hard to think now that you will go Into
any scheme against us just because
other mills are not running. Our peo
ple are doing very well, hut you know
how hard it Is for us to make both
ends meet, but we do not want to be
lorked out so that we ean’t get what
we ara now retting. We appeal to you
now, don’t shut down the mill In the
heart of winter, becauce tt is so hard
for us at this time of the year. You
were always kind to us when we came
to you and we believe you are mislead
if you shut down the mil!, beeause you
trert us nice whsn we see you. The
Si I >; and King mlilsl are not paying
Jvm- : t?larr, nod we don't see why you
