we put out across the top of the hill.
There was, I suppose, five hundred sol
diers yelled to us to come back.
Well, we had walked awful hard to
catch up and by making this cut off
we were up and just as we reached the
rear of our column an officer, a major,
rode up and arrested both of us. 1
explained to him why I had made the
cut and the duty I had been on, but
lie would not bear my story. By the
arrest we were thrown fuliy a mile
further behind. I said "Old fellow,
if there was only you and, me you
would never arrest me.”
