not necessary to give the number of

ed by about 3,000 ounce* at about 43
shillings an ounce In earh of tbe sales
this year. Of heron aod short osprey,
worth 35 shillings, thare have been
about 2,000 and 3.000 ounce* respect
ively. Most precious of all 1# the fthre
flne plume of the egret of which the
sales have averaged 500 ounces. It
now stand* at £4 10s. an ounce, but
not long ago touched £lO.
Not less Interesting is the preoara
tlon of the feather for their ultimate
purpose as hat trirom|g*s. There la
far more "making up' Hbout a feather
than people who have}(never gon-> to
the trouble of disserting one would Im
agine and, to Rive an example, one
of the upstanding plumes now so sash-
Umsbie, ha* gone through a dozen
hands and processes before it Is readv
to go out. One girl pares down the
superfluous qußl with a razor-keen
kalfa, another dedtly rubs It the wrong
way ;o *bt*’n it* best fullness, a third
c ite !he tip off two feathers and in
sert* them 'ivwem, lower down, so
■ hit It shell hr thick and full, while
they go (o another to be sewn together.
She passe# It to the next table, where
it is scraped smooth with glass, be
fore a little black varnish, neatly ap
plied, conceals all stitches. Then a
wire is inserted to give it a curving,
graceful droop at the top, and it is
dexterously curled by drawing each
flue over a blunt knife. Machinery
has often been tried for this, but so
far nothing has been invented to su
percede the human hand for the opera
tion.
