When the dog was mis sed, bills were posted through the prlis- j on. offering fifty dollars for the return of the pet. and on one of these posters the prison wit wrote: For the want of bread, the dog is dead; For the waut of meat, the dog was eat . For this every prison was put on halt rations, when at best they were getting about a quarter of a equate meal for a whole day's fare.
