To the Editor of Tile Hera Id: Sir
I Now. this is a question that ought to
I cone mi both th* merchant* and the
operative*. First, the merchants
I rhonidithink how much the have lost

I Second, they should thin'.: that th’y rc

erative*. for the merctisnt* tip In Wen ,
End buy their good* from them nndTf
I went many of them buy direct front,
them: There fore it strike* me that
they ought to consider that the isttuc
of the fight is theirs as much a* it is
the operative*’. So ne of the merchants
have given liberally for which the; '
have been generously thanked, and:
the,- will not be forgotten in the fit- |
turr •
Now 1 think It would lie wise if all
of the merchants iu Augusta would call
a meeting of themselves and ray to one
ard all it i* our duty in n?si»i the op
eratives In their just cause. Wo would
rather have meal, meat ami ayrup than
the money. I think if the m rchantr
would do tluit for us. they would lie
blest and our children would rise up
ami call them Pleased. Because it
'would go down In the history of Au
gusta for peats to come. Now, 1 don't
like to say much about the reduction in
wage*, for It is enough to make any
one's hair rise on ends when a few
men are enuring *o many women and
children to suffer. It wa* laid enough
before the cut . The operatives were
not getting enough Itefote the cut to
live .like white people. At the cut
scale, what would be the condition of
the operatives, working for 40c., 50c..;
tine.. and 70c. per tiny. Say there are
four in a family and paying for house!
rent float SI.OO to $2.10 per a tiling so,
two and three rooms. Now , what will (
they have? Can they make enough to,
pay the grocery bill, the wood bill,
clothing and shoe bill, and wash hill,:
the doctor and drug store hill? Some
body would have to go lacking, sure. j
It would make honest people dishonest. •
