With quick, trembling limbs, I has

Then I found words, arid when he

And, taking me by the hand, she ran

all sat. Dr. Melrose arose and came
forward witli his old smile of welcome
and made a movement as though he
would already give mo a brother's kiss,
but remembered in time that bis secret
was not yet disclosed.
The evening passed rapidly away in
pleasant laugh and jest. Occasionally I
intercepted a glance between Maude and
her guest, full of meaning, bnt no one
else seemed to notice it. At last he rose
to bid us goodnight, aud as he held my
hand a moment in his he whispered:
"Yon have always been the most in
defatigable-in pressing my small claim
npon you. Tomorrow I will present it
to yon for payment. May I see you for
a few moments in the morning?”
"Certainly,” I answered, but my
voice trembled, aud I think hud ho
staid a moment longer I should have
burst into tears.
All through that long night I wutob
ed my sister, sleeping so peacefully By
my side, waging my little war with
myself.
How natural that he should love her,
eo young, so lovely! But, ah, why had
my heart gone forth unasked to meet
his? At Mart the secret was ull my own
—none would suspect it.
I had not known it myself nntil I
had seen them rido by side. VVitb per
haps a shade less color, a little quiver
ing of the lip*, hut nothing more, I en
tered the parlor next morning to greet
Dr. Melrose, who stood waiting for me.
“1 have come, as you kuow, to claim
my payment, Kllie. Can you guess it.-”
A momentary struggle with myself,
then 1 answered bravely:
“Yes, ( know it all. Yon have my
consent, Dr. Melrose, although yon take
our dearest possession."
lie looked Bewildered, but suddenly
seemed to understand, as be said:
"Then you know, Kllie? Birice the
day 1 first saw you in ohurob 1 have
loved you, have cherished as my fondest
dream the hope of making you my
wife! Darling, yon are sura I have your
consent-”
“But Maude?” 1 almost gasped.
"Maude is only too happy in the
hope that 1 may win yon. She is en
gaged to a cousin whom slu- met at Mr.-
Marvin’s, and who is soon coming to
claim her. He is a splendid fellow aud
well worthy of her. But 1, ah. my dar
ling, can accept uu other payment than
yourself!”
And, tb a wild bowt or passionate
joy, of marvelous unbelief, I gave it to
him, as be scaled it wjtb the first kiss
of our betrothal.—Chicago Timet-Her
