AUGUSTA, DKG. 3.
Extract from the Minutes of the
Fire Company, met at ike City
Hotel, on Saturday evening,
the 29 tk November.
THE Company having observed
with regret a remark in the Augusta
Herald of last Friday, which they think
rather derogatory to their characters as
Firemen, they deem it an incumbent du
ty Instate to the citizens, thatit was not
in their power to save col. Hutchinson’s
kitchen. Ihe situation of the fire was
very remote; and when they got to the
place, although every exertion was used
to be there as stum as possible, the house
uas completely on fire, and hot a drop
■ol water in the adjoining pumps.
Resolved , therefore, (while the Com
ity siuccn-.l v deplore the misfortune of
the sufferer ) that the person who made
t!-e remark above alluded to, ought at
least to nave better known the circunK
stances, before reflecting on the conduct
of a number of men, whose usefulness,
had there been any possibility of doing
guod, would have been manifested to the
utmost of their power.
INDIAN NEWS.
Commencement of Hostilities. —Major
Ruffi/., Aid to Gen. Gaines, arrived in
ihis place on Sunday evening last, direct
from Fort Scott, and has politely furn
ished us with the following intelligence
-—from wr.ich it will be seen that the
first blow has been struck; and although
in a ye it affair of jittle or no conse
quence, yd it evinces a determination
on the part of the Semiuoies to persist
in their hostility.
On the Lth ult. Gen, Gaines arrived'
at hors Scott, Hint River, ahd dispatch •
ed a courier to the Chief of Fowl Town,
.in Indian village Situated above the'
Spanish boundary, and 15 miles from
rurt Scott. The messenger informed
the Chief that the General “ had a talk
for him”—he replied, tie “did not wish
to hear it; neither had he any talks for'
the General, other than those given the
officer of Fort Scott”—the
purport of which was, we believe, a re
fusal of indemnity for the outrages his
tribe had committed, and a determina
tion to defend their soil to the last. Ac
cordingly on the 20th, a detachment of
950 regulars, under the command of Mag
jor Twigg*; were put in motion, with or®
•lers to surround tin? Town, and take as
many prisoners as possible; hut not to
commit any other act of hostility, unless
necessity required it. The detachment
gave the alarm—but the cause was not
known to (he Indians until the nearer
approach of our troops, when the Sava
ges hastily fired upon them without ef
fect. Our party returned the fire, which
killed five of the enemy—who precipit
ately retreated, and fled to an adjoining
swamp for safety. Maj. Twiggs “having
executed his duty, as fir as circumstan
ces wou’d permit—persuit being imprac
ticable—he returned to the Fort. The
number of Indians composing the town
was supposed to he 250.

We have accounts from a source which
leaves not a doubt on our minds, that the
island of Amelia will betaken possession
of, and Aury and his freebooters driven
off in a few weeks, by order'of our gov
ernment—Peaceably if practicable, for
cibly if necessary. The island is to be
held by the United States’ troops, until
the meeting of Congress, when we shall
then know how matters stand between
Spain and ourselves, and how they are
to be adjusted. The president in order
ing the capture of Amelia has discharged
his duty. By this act he extends the
arm of protection to Georgia as an inte
gral part of the Union; and will prevent
encroachments dangerous to the prosper
ity of the state, and destructive of its
citizens.
It is asserted that Don Oms has in
structions from his king, to tender the
Floridas to the United States, for six
million of doMars;out which sum, Spain
agrees to deduct the amount of spolia
tions made by her on the property of A
merican citizens. Such is the confidence
placed in this report, that the stocks of
the ditferent insurance offices, that have
suffered by the depredations of Spain
rose in one day 95 per cent in value.
