- OFFICIAL NOTICE.
AN ACT for the relief of the officers, vo
lunteers, and other persons, engaged in
the late campaign against the Seminole
Indians.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House
of Representatives of the United States
of America in Congress assembled, 'I hat
any volunteer, ranger, cavalry, or
other persons, engaged in the campaign
of one thousand eight hundred and eigh
teen, against the Seminole Indians, who
has sustained damage by reason of the
loss of any horse or horses, which, in con*
' sequence of the government of the Uni
ted Sta|et failing to supply sufficient for
age, while engaged in said service, died,
or ware unavoidably abandoned and lost,
. shsll be allowed and paid the value tbere
of
Sec 2. And belt further enacted,That
said officers, volunteers, and rangers, ca
valry, or ether persons, for the loss of a
ny necessary equipage of said horse, or
’ horses, or for any guns lost in said ser
vice, or which were left in possession of
the United States or of any officer there
of, shall be allowed and paid the value
thereof; said claims to be paid of any mo
-1 neys in the Treasury, not otherwise B]
I propriated ; Provided, That, it ary pay
ment shall have been made to any officer
or soldier aforesaid, for the use and risk,
after the death or abandonment of his
. horse, such amount shall be deducted
from the value thereof, unless said officer,
* or soldier, shall show that he was re
1* mounted, in which case the deduction
shall only extend to the time such officer
or soldier served on foot: And provided
also, That, if any payment shall have been
made to any officer or soldier, on account
of clothing, such payment shall be de
ducted from the value of his Jiorse or ac
coutrement# : And provided further, That
no claim shall be allowed under the pro
visions of this act, until proper evidence
; shall have been received by the account
iug officers, from the company tt which
the claimants shall have belonged, show
ing the number of horses lost in said com
pany, in manner aforesaid, the lime when
lust, and the name of the owner.
Sec- 3, And be it further enacted, That
the accounting officer of the Treasury
Department,.shall audit and settle those,
claims under such rules and regulations
us the President of the United Stales may
prescribe.

Claimants under the foregoing art, are
hereby notified, that their claims are to be
transmitted to this office for settlement
that no claim can be allowed till the evi
dence called for by the last proviso in the
said act shall be received at th.s office
that the evidence thus called for, is to be
, contained itia roll ot each company, sworn
to by the commanding officer thereof, if
alive, or if dead, by the next surviving
officer, and which must be accompanied
by proof of the value of each horse lost:
—that to substantiate a claim for equipage
or for any gun, or guns lost, there will be
required the certificate of the officer, or
surviving officer commanding the claim
ant at the time the loss was sustained,
proving such loss, that it happened with
out any fault or negligence on the part of
the owner, and the value of the article, or
articles lostthat for a gun, or guns, left
in possession of the United Stales,or of
an officer thereof, there will be required
tihecertificat# of the officer of tfie Uni
ed States, under whose -charge, or to
whom the same was, or were left, or de
livered, proving the fact, and the value of
such gun, or guns :—that every claim
must be accompanied by a deposition of
the claimant, staring that he has not re
ceived from any officer, or agent of the
United States, any horse, or horses, equi
page, gun, or guns, (as the case may be,)
in lieu of such as he shall have lost, nor a
oy compensation for the same 5 and by
proof that the claimant is the identical
person who sustained the loss; and that
ill evidence, except the certificates of of
ficers who at the time of giving them we re

States, must be sworn to before some
Judge, justice of <ha peace, or other per
son duly authorized to administer oaths,
and of which authority proof should ac
company the evidence.

The examination of their pupils took
place on the 28th of May The highest
anticipations of the Trustees aid citizens
who attended ou the occasion vere more
than realized. The promptness with
which the most difficult questions were
answered in English Grammar, Arithmetic,
Geography both Ancient and Modern,
Rhetoric, &c. evinced at once the industry
of the pupils and the fidelity of the In
structresses.
The trustees of this Female Seminary,
at the commencement of the year, de
clared that it was not their intention to
• puff the Institution into notice: yet they
' feel no hesitation in saying that they have

public, and can only desire a proper degree
of reflection to convince them of the jus
tice of their appeal.
The situation of tLexirgton is unques
tionably healthy ; the two Academies are
located in a private part of the Village, and
are separated and distinct; and for the last
18 months have been under the direction
of Mr. Andrew Rhea i£ his daughter: The
. Trustees have engaged in addition, the
‘ services of Miss Levensvorth and Miss
Rhea, who will conduct the Female De
partment ; and Mr, Rhea, will remain at
the head of the Male Department, with
Mr. Robert Hnrdiman, his assistant. The
two institutions win be under the general
superintendance of Mr. Rhea—whies,
from his advanced age in life, and the ac
knowledged worth &. long experience as a
Teacher, entitles him to a liberal patron
age, and the confidence'of the people.—
The present session ends on the 19th inst.
at which time the Examination will take
place. The parents of children and the
public are respectfully invited to attend.
The next Session will commence on the
first Monday in July next. Board be
obtained on reasonable terms, in the u*.jst

to fifty dollars the Session. Tuition vary
