One «f the meat terrible tragedies that we ws
ever called upon to narrate, ocrurred in'this city at
half past nine o’clock last night, at the residence of
B. W. Greene, late President nf the Connecticut fire
insurance company- Mr. Greene haring oaueedtke'
death of his wife by chuing her-throat with* a raxor,
and then attempting his.own life. ' The facts ’n#,
brought ont before the ooroner’a jury were ns fol

Mr. and'Mrs. Greene were in the hohse alone,
their daughters and a nephew haring left thereabout
half peat seven, ifcers being at that time notbiar
iusual in the appearance of Mr. Greene. At hair
past nine Mary Johnston, Dina Foster and Robert
Gibbs, colored, Henry Kennedy and 8. F.- Cum
mings, on their way'from church, were within a few
rods of the residence, when theyhear£a cry of
murder. Mr. Kennedy said that as. soon as he
reached the front of tLe house be sew Mrs. Greene
standing by ths front parlor window'Which waa open;

the room and said, “Mrs. Greene, what is the mat
ter ?” She replied, “Mr. Greene has killed me; ~ be

quest, Mr, Kennedy ran for Dr. Beresferd, who came
immediately; but she was dead on bis arrival.—
