TOG tOAT QF FADED GRAY.
' BY Q, W. HARRIS,
A law hnt rests in Lookont’s shade
As rots its moss-grown roof away, .
While sundown’s glories softly, fade,
Closing another weary day;
The battle’s din is heard no more—
No more the hunted stand at bay—
The breezes through the lowly door
S.wjng mute a coat of faded grey,
A t attered relic of the iray—
A thread-hare coat of faded grey.
‘Tia hanging on the rough log wall.
Near to the foot of a widow’s bed,
By a white plume and well-worn shatfrl-
His gift—the happy mom they wed,
By the weo slip their dead child wore—
The one they gave the name ot May,
By her rag doll and pinafore—
By right its there, that coat of grey.
- -. A red fleck’d relic of the fray—
An armless coat of faded grey.
Her all of life now drapes that wall;
Poor and patient she waits'
On God’s good time to gently call
Her, too, within the jewcl’d gates;
And all she craves is here to die—
To part from these, and pass away
To join Ucr loves eternally ‘
That wore tho slip—the coat cf grey,
, A red fleck’d, relic of the fray—
Her soldier’s coat of faded grey.

“I WISH I RAD A CAPITAL,”
So I heard a great strapping young, map
exclaim tho other day. I did want to tell
him a piece of my mind so baitf. Bnt I’ll
jnst write it to him. Yon want capital, do
you ? Andsnpposo yon had what you call
capital, what would, you do. with it ? Yon
wont eapitai! Haven’t you got hands and
feet, and body and muscle, and hone and
brains; and don’t you call them capital ?•-
Whant more, capital did God -jgivo to any
body? Ohi hut they arp not money, say-
yon. Bnt they are more than money, ft
you will uso them they, will 'make money,
and nobody can tako theni from yon. * Don’t
yon know how, to uso them ? If you don’t.
It is time you was learning. Tako hold of
the first plow, or hoc, or jack-plane, or
broad-ax that you oan find, and go to work.
Your capital will soon y ield you a largo in
terest, Aye, hnt there's the nth, yon don’t
want to work, you want money or’credit
that yon may play the gentleinan and spee-

yon want a plantation and negroes, that you
may hire an oveseer to attend them, while
you ran about over tho country and dissi

some rich girl who may bo foolish enough
to take you for your flno clothes and good
looks, that she may support'youv
Shatno upon you, yonng man I Goto

will soon make Interest enough upon it,jtnd
with it,-to. give you as much money as yon
want, arid make you feel likea man.' If y on
can’t make money upon what, capitalyou
have, you oould’t moke itif you had a mil
lion of dollars in money. If yt>u,.don’t

you would not how to use gold. If you lot

Then don’t stand ahont like a great help

arid feed yon, but go'to work. Take tho
first work you can find, no matter what it
is, so that you he sure to do it like Bill Gray
did his drumming—well. Yes, whatever
