In tho recent trial of the parlies charged with tho murder of Capt. J. F\ Gruber, Mr. Tally, one of tho counsel for the defonsc, narrated the following story: Tho whole case was made tip of circumstan tial evidence of the loosest characlcr, and to illustrate how guardedly even the best and strong est circumstantial evidence, he referred to a trial that took place in this very court about thirty years ago. Judge Canongo then presided in the court and Sir. Slazttreau was the Attorney General There t lien lived on the Bayou roail a man about twen ty-five or thirty years old. lie was not au edu cated, nor a wealthy man, but be wosboucstami liad a good heart.' Having lind a limb broken lie was very infirm iu health. He made his liveli hood by going to the Bayou 8t. John every even ing and catching fish to sell in the market the next morning. One moonlight evening, while sitting on the bank ot tho bayou, fishing as usual, be saw a lady dressed in white, in company with a gentleman, walking on the road beside the bayou. They wero quarreliug ns they passed him and bis attention wits attracted by hearing them quarrel. Alter they passed he resumed his fishing, and waited until be bad caught his usual supply. He then started home with bis bnaket. As lie reached the place known as the “Coquet” lio heard a loud cry and soon alter a feeble cry. Advancing in the direction of the sound lie saw a woman in a white gown lylnj^on the pavement, and coming to the woman he per- •eived that a dagger had been stabbed into tier bosom. Thinkiug to relieve her he took the dagger by the handle nnd drew it out. As be did so a watchman grasped him. The woman was killed. The poor fisherman was tried for the murder. The case was made out clearly against him. lie liad been detected in the very act, bending over the body of tho deceased with tho weapon in liis hand. He was convicted, and was hung at Congo Square. About six months alter a trial was going on in Judge Cauonge's court. A citizen called us a juror said lie did not wish to be on the jnry and wished to speak a few words U) the judge. The judge allowed him a private conversation. Supposing that he might have scruples about capital punishment, the judge asked him if that was the reason lie objected to being on tho jury. “Ho,” lie answered, “that is not the reason. I saw the fisherman hung for the murder of my wife. He did not do it. I killed Iter myselt from jealousy." The judge Bat petrified. The man made for the door, es caped, and has never been beard of since. Suicruii in Connecticut.—The Hartford Time* of last Saturday contains the following brief account of a suicide committed at Glastcn- bury on the preceding evening: Wc were shocked to hear of tho suicide of Captain Robert Q. Welles, late of the regular army, and eldest surviving son of Hon. Thnudcus Welles, ol Glastenbury. The rash act was com mitted a tew minutes before ti o’clock last even ing, in his tattler's library. Mr. Welles sat read ing his evening newspaper, when Robert, who had been conversing with him, exhibited a pistol His father remonstrated against carrying such a weapon, and asked bis son to give it to ldm. Tile latter declined, though iu no unfriendly spirit.— Suddenly approaching bis father, lie thing tils left atm uronnd his neck and kissed him, when with the single exclamation, “Farewell, lather 1" he sank back into a chair, put the pistol to Ids head and fired—all so quickly that Ills lather, though springing up to arrest him, was unable to prevent it. The ball passed through Captain Welles’ head immediately buck of the right temple, coming out just above the left ear, and striking a book in the library, fell flattened upon the floor. Captain Welles was just 21 years old. He served with marked credit in tho regular army, where be gained his rank, and resigned not long utter the close of the war. J In was a young man of uncommon talents, and everybody esteemed him. The family arc overwhelmed by this trcsli and crushing affliction.
