As Lieutenant towns, ot our city police,
was making a tour of observation on yesterday
not very far from the city cemetery, he discov
ered a novel lager beer establishment recently
put in operation—novel on account ot the
shelter—a huge tree—which protected the con
cm*, and into which was safely and conveniently
lodged the barrel containing the refreshing bov

Itlacle Lnutern Exhibition.
There will be a Magic Lantern Exhibition ou
donday evening, in the Lecture Boom of the
lecond Baptist Church, the proceeds of which
,re to be appropriated to clothing and educating
he two hundred poor children who attend the
lahbalh school of that church. The school now
umbers nearly four hundred. Of these nearly
inc-halt aro cither orphans, or the children of
ery poor parents.
The exhibition will be a beautiful affair. The
antern to be used is an oxy-calcium stereoscop
icon, capable of giving a brilliant picture of fif-
een feet in diameter. About filly-three pictures
will be used, of which thirty arc exquisitely
tainted scenes illustrating the Old and New
"estamenta.
We hope all the Sabbath school teachers aud
arger children will be present. Admission only
wenty-flve cents.

Gents.—I hereby respectfully tender my re
signation as Councilman for Fifth Ward.
Bespectflilly, A. P. Bell.
The Street Committee reported ou the peti
tions of sundry citizens, asking to have opened
either Cooper or Windsor streots, that at present
both ore impracticable, but recommend the open
ing and grading ot Richardson street to Prior
street, which would give the petitioners a way
to the center ot the city at present. Report
adopted.
The same committee also reported on lhe pe
tition of citizens on Moore street, that the street
lines had been defined as asked for. Adopted.
The same committee also reported on the pe
tition of S. It. McCamy and J. J. Thrasher, that
the alleged damages asked for they recommend
not to he paid, but recommend the removal ot
the dirt placed on their lot by the street hands
Report adopted.
The Committee on Gas reported adversely to
extending street lamps from McDonough street
to the jail. Report adopted.
Tlie Committeo on Relief was directed and
empowered cither to sell, or cause to be moved
to tlie Alms House, the Small Pox Hospital
buildings.
Petition of L. B. Phillips in relation to losr
City check, reud and referred to tlie Finance
Committee.
Mr. Hawson, Chairman ot Special Committee
to examine as to danger of fire resulting from a
stationary engine used by G. W. Jack, on White
hall Streot, reported tliat there was but little
danger of fire occurring from the use af the en
gine where it is, hut think tliat the Messrs. Jack
ougfit to pay the extra insurance demanded on
adjoining property in consequence oi the running
ot tlie engine. Report laid on the table for tlie
present.
By Mr. Hayden—
Resolved, That the Police Committee be au
thorized to contract tor one half of the brick
Warehouse in rear of old Masonic Hall, and
have the same repaired to bo used by the city
as a calaboose.

An nccount for $.10 was presented by Mrs.
Langford, for services at Small Pox Hospital.

A communication from E. J. Hicks, 1st Engi
ncer Deluge Fire Company No. 8, Nashville, in
relation to Engine ol Atlanta Fire Company No.
4, was read. That company being an indepen
dent joint stock coir.pnny—the city not beiug
interested—the matter was turned over to said
company.
Tho following Ordinance was read and passed:
An Ordinance to repeal an Ordinance entitled
“An Ordinance to regulate tlie erecting and
running of Stationary Steam Engines in the
City of Atlanta,” passed February 15,1807,
aud to provide a substitute therefor.
Sec. 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and
Council of the city of Atlanta, That tho Ordi
nance entitled “An Ordinance to regulate the
erecting nud running of Stationary Steam Ed.
giues in the City of Atlanta," passed February
15,1807, be and the same is hereby repealed.
Sec. 2. Be it further ordained, That from and
after tlie passage of this Ordinance, it shall be
unlawful for any person to erect or run, or cause
to bo erected or run, a stationary steam engine of
any kind or description, within the fire limits of
the city of Atlanta, without previously obtaining
the permission of the Mayor and Council lor the
erection and running of the same. Every viola
tion oi this ordinance, on conviction before the
Mayor or three members of Council, shall be
punished by a fine of not exceeding one hundred
dollars ior eacli nud every day that such engine
is permitted to remain and run, or by imprison
ment in tho calaboose, or common jail ol Fulton
county, for any time not exceeding thirty dnya.in
the discretion of the court.
His Honor, the Mayor, announced the follow
ing appointments on standing committees, to fill
the vacancies occasioned by tlie resignation oi Mr
Bell, viz:

On Tax—Mr. Rawson.
On Relief— Mr. Hayden.

The city subscribed for fifty copies of Barn
