The Confederate Dead.
We have been again requested lo invite the la
dies to go out to the cemetery to-day and to
morrow, with the necessary assistance lor “clean
ing the graves of the Confederate dead, prepara
tory for the decoration on Friday.” Surely, this
is a work in which all will engage with sad and
melancholy readiness.
v •
Western dc Atlantic Hatlroad.
The following is the number ot loaded cars
brought lo Atlanta by the Western & Atlantic
Railroad during the six days ending with tho 20th
of April:
April 15—Loaded Cara Arrived 106
April 16—Loaded Cara Arrived 181
April 17—Loaded Cara Arrived 90
April 18—Loaded Cara Arrived 85
Apiil 19—Loaded Cara Arrived 93
April 90—Loaded Cara Arrived 133
Total No. of Cara Arrived 047
Strangers visiting the Gate City and noticing
the immense amount of freight daily brought
here over that magnificent enterprise, the State
Hoad, are led to wonder what becomes of it all.
But Atlanta is tho great distributing point for an
immense section, nnd must continue to grow in
population and increase in business as the re
sources of tlie country shall bo developed and
multiplied. Heavy as the business done by the
Western & Atlantic Road now is, it to nothing
in comparison with what it will be in a year or'
two under ito present efficient management.—
Promptness, energy and industry never fail to
add to the business of all kinds of enterprises,
whether public or private—a tact winch should
be more generally understood and acted upon.
Atlanta Medical College.
That most excellent literary journal, tho
'‘Lailka’ Home!'—one that should reach the habi
tation and be read at every fireside of every fami
ly in Georgia—says:
"Wc publish this week the announcement of
tlie Atlanta Medical College, the next regular
course ot which will commence on the first Mon
day in May. We understand the course will
open with an attendance of not less than one
hundred pupils. Tho dissecting room to already
opened, and quite a large class in attendance—
larger than any since 1859.
"The college is now in find condition. Tlie
building and grounds have been thoroughly re
paired, and all the appliances restored or re
placed. The iaculty is thoroughly re-organized,
each department being supplied with a compe
tent professor.
“We invite tlie attention of young men in this
aud oilier States to the facilities afforded by this
old and reputable institution. The health fulness
ul this locality, its centrality, excellent water
nnd good Bociety, are all inducements for young
men to come hither in quest oi this profession,
dome of the most successful physicians iq this
and other Southern States arc graduates of this'
college."
In connection with the foregoing, we feel call
ed upon to give denial to a report which has been
extensively circulated in this State, to-wit: that
no courso of lectures would be delivered at this
College duriug this year. We can assure the
public, aud all interested in medical science and
the teachings thereof, that every preparation has
bi-eu made to that end, as well in the selection ot
u Faculty, as in providing lor tho comfort and
instruction of students, of whom a number are
already present in this city. Tho recent acquisi
tion to the College of Dr. H. V. M. Miller,
who, we learn, has made arrangements to become
a citizen of Atlanta, in order to discharge the
duties of a professorship which he lias accepted
in that institution, also gives contradiction lothc
report referred to, while it wilt bring to it many
from a distance who will be attracted there by
the reputation of Docrron M. as a medical lec
turer, teacher, aud practitioner. Wc arc assured
that tlie prospects of having a very largo class in
attendance upon the lectures at tho approaching
session, were never more encouraging. Success
attend it!
The Weather.
The weather lias been delightful for the past
lew days, aud things about the city begin to
ear a bright and cheering appearance. Our
merchants generally are in receipt ot their sup
plies of spring and summer goods, aud while
business aud trade is not so lively as might be
desired, the calls upon them arc neither few nor
iiir between. No city has a more cutcrprlsing
class of merchants and business meu than At-
laula, aud their ouly drawback to an emiuent
degree of success is the rather stinted manner
in which they advertise their goods aud wares
in the city papers. But this is au error which
can be easily remedied, aud wo have no doubt
they will generally hasten to take the necessary
step sb soon as it is brought properly to their
attention.
Sent to Jail.
A colored damsel, of some twenty or more
summers, yclept Mary Burton, was committed to
jail on yesterday by Judge Butt for stealing from
her paramour, one Mr. David , hailing from
Macon, black as (tie ace ot spades, while he was
lovingly wooiug her, some eleven dollars in na
tional currency. Mary was cruel so to take a
i ranger in, and he more cruel so to take revenge!
But cannot the law, lb some way, reach the cruel
David—has lie committed no ofieuae 1
The Country.
Our advices (rom the surrounding country are
louiewhatencouraging. The farmers are to some
:xtent behind with their business, owing to the
protracted wet season, but the recent fine and fa
vorable weather has Bet them all lo work with
renewed energy and industry, and If it continues
they will soon lie up to time with their planting
perations. Similar reports reach us from more
emote portions of the Stale, and there to abun-
ant reason to believe that, with suspicious sca
ns, the hardships and privations under which
a people are now straggling, will soon disap-
Lct us take courage agg pf hopetul.
Reconstruction—New Store-New Goods.
Under this heading Air. I. T. Banks, one of
Atlanta’s old and enterprising business men, no
tifies the public in this day’s Issue of the Intel
ligencer, that he lias resumed business at the
corner of Whitehall and Hunter streets, in tlie
“ Rawson building,” where lie to now opening
the largest stock, embracing tlie latest styles, in
the boot and shoe line that has ever been brought
to this city, which lie will dispose of at " very
short profits,” aud “ at prices which cannot fail
to give satisfactiou.” We invite attention to the
notice ot Air. Banks, who is known in this com
munity as au entirely reliable aud enterprising
citizen.
Are You Insured #
It lias been well remarked that any property
worth having is worth insuring; aud so wherever
you find a thrifty, prosperous business man, you
see one who never neglects to guard ids destruc-
tahlu property from loss by conflagration.

will give a ticket of the same—the vendor will enter the
same numbers upon tho Manager’s register—and pnr
chasers will bo careful to see them entered upon the reg
ister, as the managers are responsible for that only.
Every ticket has the class numbered on it, and tho draw
ings are in public, as follows: On the drawing of tho
numbers well mixed. It is then opened, aud a boy, blind
folded, draws out one number, which is opened nnd ex
hibited to the audience. This operation is repeated until
tho whole 12 numbers are drawn out, and these 12 num
bers decide all tickets In that class. All numbers drawn
In the Supplementary Scheme are equal—no difference in
what order they come from the wheel.

In public, and the prizes are paid immediately upon tho
drawing, without any deduction. Tickets for sale at
