Atlanta Fire Company No. 1.
We have been shown a letter from .Manches
ter, New Hampshire, dated, the 18th, to S. Wil
son, Secretary, in which It is stated that the new
engine for the company would ho shipped from
that point, on the 23d, and would probably be
sent forward from New York on the 34th. So
that ifs arrival may bo expected in a few days.
This will be gratifying intelligence to the galluut
members of No. 1.
Aid for Campbell County.
Wo learn that Judge J. C. Bowden passed
through Atlanta on yesterday en route to Wash
ington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and other cities
iu that direction, to solicit aid for the suffering
poor ot his county. Judge Bowdeu is the agent
regularly appointed by the Inferior Court of
Campbell, and we trust that his mission will
meet with success.
The Bridge at Bridgeport.
According to notice published, trains will cross
the bridge at Bridgeport, on tho Nashville aud
Chattanooga Road, to-day, the 25th, and there
will be no further interruption in freights or
travel on that lino. We learn that the cost of
replacing the bridge across the Tennessee at
Bridgeport will amount to nearly $100,000. The
loss outsido of this, not including the freight
damaged at Chattanooga, will count up at least
auotlier $100,900. Should the company he com
pelled to settle for the freight injured, the above
amount will be increased about $50,000, which
will make a total of $350,000. The Nashville
papers speak in high terms of the energy and
promptitude displayed by tho officers ot this
road in mectmg and repairing the great disaster
which lind been sustained through ttio floods.—
They certainly deserve great credit.

We invito the attention of our city readers to
the advertisement of “ Barnwell’s Directory ot
the City ot Atlanta,” which appears in our ad
vertising columns. Tho work may lie had at
the “Franklin Printing House,” in this city^
on very tavorable terms, either by tho single
copy at $2; two copies for $3; or five copies for
$5. TJie edition printed is a small one, and only
a limited number ot copies are now on hand to
dispose of. The business men ot our city who
have not secured a copy ot this valuable work
had better do so at once. -Tho merchants ot
other cities who have business transactions with
Atlanta, had better secure a copy also. Copies
ordered with the cash enclosed will be promptly
sent by mail. See advertisement for further
particulars.
The Powell Property—Great Heal l£«tate
Sale To-Day at Public Outcry.
The seventeen valuable and beautUul resi
dence lots, known as the “ Powell Property,”
will be sold to-day, at public outcry, about two
o’clock p. m., by Colonel Q. W. Adaiii, auc
tioneer. These lota adjoin tho residence of Col
onel John Collier, and have other pleasant sur
roundings, convenient to the business portion of
our city, and flre well laid off, divided by conve
nient alleys and streets, and have some large
forest shade trees upon them. Tho sale will
doubtless be attended by large numbers of our
own citizens and others seeking a building resi
dence. The locality of these lots is high and
[ healthy—terms accommodating. There is no
f better building property in Atlanta. We expect,
I “ wind and weather permitting,” to see everybody
i ut the sale, and to hear high figures pronounced
when “Georoe” cries out—gone!

The Press.
This Is tbe title of a lively little sheet, printed
and published at Athens, East Tennessee, by W in.
C. Davis & Co. We learn that it circulates libe
rally in the counties of McSllnn, Monroe, Polk,
Bradley and Meigs, the heaviest grain-growing
and meat-ralsiDg section in Tennessee, and com
mission merchants and other bu3in6ss men who
desire trade from that direction, would probably
liud profit in using the Preen as an advertising
medium.
^ Mod. Water.
This delightful beverage is served up, by day
and by night, in tbe finest stylo, and of the best
quality, at the Drug Establishment ot Tayi-ob &
' Davis, in the National Hotel building. With
the choicest varieties of Byrups, aud the noda it
self artistically prepared, there will doubtless be
the same run upon the fount of Doctors T. & D.
that wus made upon it the post summer, and no
one going away dissatisfied. In addition to their
former supplies of delicious syrups, we learn
that our friend Taylor has secured others most
rare, and rich, and exquisite, designed especially
for tbe ladies, while he has not forgotten whip is
most attractive and agreeable to the gentlemen?
millinery.
We would direct the attention of our lady
aders to tbe advertisement ot Mrs. J. Frank’s
