Friday Morning, April 38, 1867. Tlio Press Association Wo continue our extracts tills morning. IFrom the Macon Telegraph. 1 DU we protend to go into detail, and recount the various courtesies ami attentions that were showered In prolusion upon tho representatives ol the Press, we might (ill :t page of tho Tde- yrapA with the recital; but time and space both forbid, and we shall but glaneo nt the surl'aee.ol a munificent hospitality and bog our Atlanta Iriends to be assured that wo appreciate aud shall gratefully remember all their kindness. Their journalists, their landlords', their mer chants, their railrond men and city officials have all run up a long account against tia, and we on ly add that wo would settle in full if wo could. All took an active Interest In our comfort and pleasure, and no cllort was spared to minister to Our cotemporary then speaks in the highest terms of the National and other hotels ol Atlatir ta, and of the supper as a grand allair, and con tlnues: Nor were the visitors provided for only when at business or nt rest. Tho cavalry arrange ments of Drs. Simmons aud Qrtne were com plete. Carriages, buggies, and saddle horses were at our disposal, thus enabling our party, at leisure hours, to visit all the objects of interest In the iar-reachiug domains of Atlanta. The extensive Iron Works ami Rolling Mills of J. I). Gray & Co., on tho State Road, about a mile aud a halt from the city, wore visited, and at tracted much attention by their novelty. Many ot oar party had never witnessed the operation of the powerful machinery used iu such estab lishments, and were wonder-struck ot tiro facility with which a glowiug and jagged mass was con verted in smooth and solid rods or bars. The terrific furnaces in lull commotion were sugges tive, and convoyed intimations, tho wholesome effects ol which we hope will be practically il lustrated in the lives of some of'tho beholders! The work of the company is nt present confined to the manufacture oi bar and rod iron ami rail road spikes, though the machinery for rolling T rails for railroads is going up, aud will he in op eration in the course ot the coming mouth. Such an establishment is an acquisition to the State, and we wish Sir. Gray and his company every success, besides returning to him our thanks for his courtesies. Among other places visited was the new Cem etery, on Uto Georgia Railroad, a spot admirably selected for its solemn purpose, and which will prove an object ol great attraction in years to The Vnlurc of tlio Sea l*1aud People, A correspondent of tho New York Times, writing from llcaulort, South Carolina, under dale ot April 11th, gives a sad and deplorablo account oi the people of tho Sea Islands. Tho writer, we take it, is a Northern man, and says ho lias uo object but to slate (acts with a hope that the growing evil ol which he speaks may be remedied. We quote a short extract: The gravest fears are to he entertained by every thoughtful person concerning the future condi tion of tlieao Sea Island people, because ot ono terrible evil, which if not speedily restrained is sure to end in tho moral and material destruc tion of the negro race. I refer to the want of chastity by winch the entire race are being rapid ly demoralized. I ant speaking oi facts, not lor sensation purposes, nor that 1 may make a point against the propriety of their enjoying human rights. I am living with my family on a plan tation among them where I have lived ior the past four years, and 1 am speaking for their best good. Tho facta I would state are these: Among the two plantations"of people adjoining me on one side there is scarcely one young woman who has arrived nt the age ol 15 or 10 years who has not become a mother outsido of wedlock. Of these children tints horn the large majority are half white and were born during the war. But this terrible work, guperadded to the habits oi slave life, is now going on upnee ami I know on these same places of eight married women who have the evidences of their infidelity about them. In some oi these cases the husband takes um brage at the conduct of the wife and leaves her, in others not. The worst feature ol the matter is that this conduct does not outcast the actors iu it, nor is it so frowned upon ns to render them obnoxious. Some ol the older ol them and better of the people see the evil and lament over it, “but dese young people be spile by close free dom.” These are not exceptional plantations. It was not so with them when I first came here. I his fearfkl condition was brought about by Union officers ami soldiers. No people were so while under my supervision, because 1 was care ful to keep them away Ironi Beaufort and Iront campst Those people who have been habitually away from Beaufort aro free from that sad blight, at least measurably so. NUTS, RAISINS, Atlanta lias risen os if by magic from the des olation and ashes of war. There lias been noth ing like it iu the past, and the matchless energy that has tints spoken a large city, with massive uud costly blooks for business and every neces sary public building on a grand scale, iuto sud den existence, is passing all comprehension. Such enterprise need not stagger at any undertaking. It 1ms beon, too, a most beneficent movontent. Thousnuds would have sufiered and hundreds starved, but for the labor opened up to them iu the rebuilding of tho city. We would be glad to specify many new structures and comment on them and their purpose, but fear to make this hasty sketch too long. « On Friday alternoon tho Association was complimeuted with an excursion by special train over the State Road to Marietta, a courtesy for which we were indebted to the accomplished Superintendent, Major Campbell Wallnce. Air. J. B. Peck, Master of Transportation; Ira E. Taylor, Auditor, and Mr. John Flynn, Master Pur Youtt House in Oudeu.—The cholera is again threatening Ibis continent, as well as Europe, ami it would he well for the Boards of Health, both in town and country alike, to heed the admonition. The warm weather is at hand, and if wo intend to put our houses in order, there is no lime to lose. The disease is said to he prevailing in Mexico, alternating witli yellow fever, while we know it has been doing its work with dreadful fatality, in Central America. The latest intelligence from Rio Janeiro, also, is to the effect that it has broken out in the southern province of Rio Grande. In the little capital of Rio Grande de Sul, there has been already 143 deaths between the 0th and 14th of March The fewest number of deaths was six, on the Otli, and the greatest, fifty-one, on the 14th. Tiie road and rolling stock aro in better con dition than we have ever seen them before, and reflect the highest credit upon those officers. There are no rough places in the track, the cn- gins aro kept bright and clean as if just from the manufacturer’s hands, und even tire freight cars are well painted and in an excellent state of pre servation. Tito road, too, is pouring thousands monthly into the treasury, thus proving the hitherto disputed fact that there is more titan one man in Georgia who lias tho ability to man age it successfully. In Air. Wallace aud Mr. Peck the Governor lias found real treasures, and al vail. CCS, and all the neighboring buildings, with nearly the whole of tho public snunre at Alari- eita, wero destroyed by Shertpan s army when .hey evacuated it. It was a hard and undeserved late for tliut beautiful little city, but wc are glad .. re gli to see that it is slowly rising from Its ashes. The National Cemetery just back ot the towu aud in full view, is being improved at an enormous ex pense, aud will be iu time one of the most attract ive, iu appearance, in the Union. Alany thousand Federal dead now repose on its bleak sides, and the remains are being brought in daily from ev ery battle field from Chattanooga to Atlanta. Money brings friends; want of it frenzy ! The proceedings of llie Southern Associated Press having been published, it is unnecessary to refer to its deliberations in detail. The meet ing was harmonious and satisfactory. Existing relations witli the New York Associated Press are continued, as being most likely to subserve the best interests of tho 8outhorn Press. Tiie city of Atlanta is still progressing. Pub lic edifices, stores and dwellings are being erect ed. In less than two years it has arisen from Us ashes, presenting unexampled enterprise and eu- ergy far surpassing almost anything of the kind in tho history ol any city on thjs continent. Tiie friendly hospitality extended the members oi tiie press was unexpected. Every attention and accommodation that could be desired was given ami provided. The complimentary ban quet from the citizens to tho members of tiie Convention, prepared by the hosts of tho Na tional Hotel, was a magnificent affair. It was “literally a feast of reason and a flow of soul.” To the proprietors and editors of the Intelti- uencer, Ne'O Era, and Daily Opinion, the Chroni cle it Sentinel, through its representatives, stands under obligations, (or which an acknowledgment is now made with the hope that, at some future time an opportunity to reciprocate may be pre- sen ted. Under ordinary circumstances, we would be j more profuse of our indebtedness to the people AIu. Davis.—Tho following Washington dis patch appears in some of the papers. We don’t suppose anything of the kind occurred: Payne Bagley lormcrly missionary to India and Japau, a few days since called on Jefferson Da vis and endeavored to induce him to apply to President Johnson for a pardon, believing that with the names he could get to a petition for a pardon it would ho granted by the President.— Air. Davis declined to mako the application, as it would be a confession of his guilt aud would prejudice his case at the trial, which he under stood wns close at hand. Air. Bagloy went to the President to ascertain if a pardon would be granted on petition alone, but learned the Presi dent granted no pardons without an application from the culprit. Its memories will always be plea sant, but the effect—“aye, there’s the rub”—our Atlanta iriends can understand and are responsi ble for. Hence our inability, even at this lapse ol time, to do full justice to the occaslou. The subject has already been overdone. No Pent up Utica.—The New York Herald, which generally indulges expansive notions aud rides a tall horse, says in reference to the future ol this great and growing country, which at no distant day is to absorb everything from Baffin’s Bay down to Patagonia aud the Terre del Fuego: “ Manifest destiny, under all these advantages, marks out the North American Continent as the future map of the United States. Men ot the present generation may live to hear iu Congress that the Speaker has appointed a member each from New York, Quebec, New Archangel, San Fracisco, the city ot Mexico, Panama, Havana, Hayti and Jamaica as the House Committee on Foreign Affairs." Good Humor.—Good humor is the clear blue sky of the soul, on which overy star of talent will shine more clearly, and the sun ol genius en counter no vapors in his passage. It is the most exquisite beauty of a fine lace—a redeeming grace in a homely one. It Is like the green iu the landscape—harmonizing with every color, mellowing the glories oi the bright, and soften ing the hue of the dark; or, like a flute in a full concert ot instruments, a sound not first discov ered by the ear, yet filling up the breaks in the concord with its soft melody. Important, if Truk.—The New York Ex press states that a formidable naval expedition lell that port a few days Bince, for Mexico, iu the interests of the Liberals. The steamer General McCullum, aud the brig Nellie Hammond, are suid to be implicated. Both vessels are reported to have cleared for Tampico, aud, by this time, must be near their destination. Tho Nellie Hammond is a vessel of five hundred tons bur- deu, find was chartered (so the rumor goes) tor teu thousand dollars. Both vessels, It is further said, were abundantly supplied with arras-and each had an unusually numerous crew. The expedition Is said to be under the command of Colonels Farrell and Smith—and that, on land ing in Mexico, Geueral Lew. IV ailace, now serving in tho Republican army, will be placed iu commund. Sensible Remark.—Tho Selma Messenger says in regard to the political tendency in that State: “ A Radical party is forming iu tliia State- United, determined, fearless, wc may check it now—a year lienee, we may be powerless. \Ve must not despise tiie day of small things. The cloud no bigger than a man’s band should warn us to trim our sails for tbe coming storm. Half way opposition to embryo radicalism here only strengthens it. He builds it up, who acts with it in the movement to establish a radical State government over us under the Sherman bill." Newspapers in California.—Twenty years ago, there were uo newspapers in California. To-day there are twelve dailies, one tri weekly, aud forty-one weeklies in San Francisco alone. In the remainder of the State, there are twelve dailies, one tri-weekly, and seventy-three week lies. Californians are a reading people, and the State press is fully up to the average of our best Eastern papers. Popular Errors.—'That editors keep public reading rooms. That they have plenty of time to talk to everybody. That they are delighted to get anything to fill up the puper with. That they are always pleased to have assistance in selecting copy for the paper. That every mail’s own private ax is a matter of “public iuterest." That It doesn’t make much difference whether copy be written on both sides. That editors return rejected manuscripts. Attempt to Murder.—On Monday night, just alter Mr. William Garrett, living uear Jones’ Bluff, in Sumter county, Alabama, had retired, a pistol sliot was' fired at him from a window op posite tho bed in which lie was lying. Upon going out lie met some of his ireeduien, who in formed him that the shot l.ad been fired by a former servant ol his, who had sometime before left his employment- The wonld-be aseasin was Cross-Cut Saws, Clifton Mill Company's Carriage and Tire Bolts, Brlnley's Celebrated Kentucky Plows, Calhoun's Standard Kentucky Plows, Colline' Casteel Plows, Gibson’s Patent Cultivator Plows, Dupont’s Rille and Blasting Powder.
