It now sells lor lour cents per pound, or $ii per hundred. The Arctic Soda Fount was compelled to suspend its bub bling for a brief period, but “ Dr. Kane” says it shall nut occur again, ns lie is now negotiating with some one in the Russo-Ainerican posses- ] sions for future supplies ol ice. The dust ol which we complained on yeslcr- ilay was effectually laid last night by one of the most refreshing showers of the season. The town again exhibited a “stoical” aspect mi yesterday. Business was just tolerable only, and if there was anything more exciting than the splendid rain which commenced falling about twilight, tio report of it reached “these head quarters.” The “ round house,” and other substantial im provements at the Georgia Shop are progressing bravely. Corn sold by the car load at depot yesterday at $ 1 20 and $1 25 for prime white and mixed. There is a declining tendency in llie article of Flour. A good article of Superfine may he pur chased at $1.50 per sack. We may also men tion a sort of “lock” in the wheat market. The tide of travel through this “Gale City” turnpike is unceasing. Our popular landlords breakfast some, dine others, while not a lew snp with them, get a good night’s rest, ami pro- WH itakkh * sa* eccd on their way rejoicing next morning—all of which is not an inconsiderable source of rev enue to our town. We are told that the largest and finest military Imml of music outside of headquarters at Wash ington, is now in this city. We have not been wooed by its dulcet notes, and can only speak from hearsay. It should he “trotted ’round” n little on these bewitching moonlight nights. Considerable gold was sold in this city yes terday at 41. At the close of business 42 was asked by dealers, hut we heard of no transactions at those figures. On Monday night the organization of the above-named association was completed by the election of permanent officers. The election was quite an animated one, there being a large num ber of members in attendance, and many popu lar candidates. Pease & Jack, Sundry bottles ol champagne would therein he found. Accordingly the association resolved itself into a committee of the whole, and went as requested. A few minutes served to set innumerable corks to pop ping, and wine and wit flew rapidly until ttoarly two o’clock. Several gentlemen made speeches that were not less sparkling than the champagne, and mirth and good feeling sent the whole party to comfortable pillows. Last evening the first meeting of tho Board of Directors was held in tho office of Gartrell & Jackson. On Monday evening a general installation of officers will take place in the Council Chamber. Harmony Mills, Cohoes, N. Y. Nkwbern, N. C. April 4,18#J0. Messrs. Horace L. Emery eft Son: Gkntlkmbn—I take pleasure In informing you thaithe thirty-five saw Universal Cotton Gin and Condenser pur chased from your house in 1851, has been In use through two seasons, aud has been removed and used ou many different plantations. It is readily driven by two mules. Gives us more Hut cotton, and of much better quality, from the same amount or seed cotton than any othergm I have seen in my trave ls in the cotton business through out live of the best cotton growing States. AH the cot ton cleaned by your Universal Gin and Condenser, has uniformly commanded from two to three cents per pound over that ol the same grade from other gins in this mar ket, for the two eensous Inst passed. The Condenser attachment is indispensable in my eat I mat Ion. This gin and condenser easily cleans two thou sand pounds of lint per day, with two mules, which is nearly double the amount that any other gin can do with the same amount of power. You are at liberty to use any part of this letter which you may desire. All the foregoing statements can he verified by affidavits of many planters, and others, if you wish for it. The man who has the gin in use is now here, and endorses all I have written. I have several ap plications from planters to furnish gins and condensers of your manufacture, and will order them forward for them in time for the ucw crop. Y., nnd their Universal Cotton Gin and Condenser, for several years, and have handled much rcotton cleaned by these machines, and wo do not hesi tate to say that we consider the improvements in them as a valuable acquisition to cotton ginning machinery. We consider them equal to tho bust, IT not superior to all others in universal use, tlielr advantages being a greater uniformity of the ouality and condition of the cotton cleaned by them, and a much more complete sepa ration of all sand and dust from the lint cotton in tlu* process of ginning. Ac., JOHN S. GUTHRIE. Columbia, S.(’., February 2(1,1867. Messrs. Horace L. Emery it Son, Albany, N. Y.: Gentlemen—Tho set of Cotton Ginning machinery which I purchased from you last season for my own use, has been lu constant use ever since its arrival in October la-t. Your Universal Cotton Gin and Condenser has ac quired a reputation in ibis section which gives it the precedence overall others. Its superiority ia acknowl edged bv nil who have witnessed its operation, as it runs easier, does more work, deans the seed more perleclly, separates motes and trash more thoroughly, and delivers the clean cotton in hotter condition than any other gin in use hereabout. I have had all the ginning and packing tiiat I could attend to, and have run them steadily night and day. My charge for ginning nml packing has been ten dollars per hale of 400 pounds, which price the plan ters prefer to pay me, on account or the better classifica tion and higher prices obtained lor their cotton, rather than huve it ginned on the old-fashion gins of (lie coun try, which charge but four to five dollars per bale. Some of the best and most practical judges in the State, many of them members of the Legislature, tell me the seed me cleaned closer, and u much better sample, as also a larger per rentage of lint Is made than can he secured with any other make of gin in use at the South. These are facts, and 1 can give you tho names of the parties at any time, should you wish to make mention of this statement. I am, most respectfully. A. It. J'.; GhNTLKMKN—1 purchased one of your twenty-five saw Universal Cotton Gins and Condenser* ol your agent at Houston, aud ginned my crop of cotton on it iu Novem ber la-t. , , The parties who ginned lor me had never seen a gin in operation in their lives, Imt had a good knowledge ol iiia cfiinery. , , , The seed cotton was quite trashy, as well as damp. People about me pronounced the Gin a Yankee trick—said tt would not do, that it would nap tho cotton, Ac. I sent my cotton to market, almost feeling that the Yan kee trick would swindle mo out of half the price of my cotton, hearing men speak so lightly or the machines causing me to feel so. Arthur H. Kdy, of Galveston, sold my cotton as strict low middling, for twenty five cents per pound in specie, when the market was at the lowest eldi 1 have know it this season, and ou the same day that otlnr cotton ol ex actly tho same grade, hut ginned ou the o d style gins i»r the country, was sold for nineteen cents per pound. 1 have my account of sales before me, which shows Ibis. Tims the Yankee trick made me thirty dollar* per Dale, or six cents per pound more tlmn others. I expect to gin about six hundred hale* ol cotton this season, and shall purchase one of your Illy--saw Universal Gins and Condensers, which, together with the one 1 have, I shall drive with my small steam engine. I am yours truly, JOHN 11. WILSON. or not with the Gin. Its purpoae being to receive the lint nnd blast from the gin, nnd serves to separate the wind and dust from the lint—delivering the latter In one continuin'* sliver or hat perfectly ginned and cleaned, ready for hailing and market. This sliver or bat is sufficiently compact to render It very convenient for handling, nnd dispenses entirely with the necessity of the ordinary lint room. When the Con denser is used the process may he carried on iu the open field without the' loss of a single fibre of cotton. Tho saw used in these gins nro of superior construc tion. Their teeth nro made by patent nmchiiiery, espe cially designed, constructed nnd patented by the exlifht- mrs’for this nurpose. They resemble in form the thorn ol n rose hush, aro quite tangential and fine pitch, there being between seven and eight teeth to the inch. The saws are made of the best steel and of one solid plate, with square fittings upon tlielr shaft, and perfectly iia mnered and very hi Iff. The spaces between tho saws are made with Iron col lars, with their edges toward the saws perfectly lathe- turued, by which a uniform accuracy of working of the saws Is attained, instead of collars made of wood or soft metal used by other manufacturers, and which are liable to decay nnd variation. These Gins nnd Condensers may readily ue arranged for ginning cotton with long or short staple, large or Miinll seeds, strong or tender fibre, with equal facility. Tlielr whole construction is simple, compact, neat, strong, durable and offleient. They are easily managed, perfectly safe for the operator and themsoives. anu re quire very little power to drive them to turn out a large amount of very superior work per day. These machines have been in constant and practical operation by steam power in the main Hail, during Hie last weeks of the Exhibition, upon seed cotton furnish ed by Messrs. Norris A Baldwin, Cotton Brokers, of this city, with perfect -atifaction, and their operation W0» witnessed by thousands of visitors with universal ap probation. it is the opinion of your committo that tills Gin, wit ti its improvement* and the Condenser attachment, will supersede all others heretofore iu use in the cotton grow ing districts; and that it will be found that the cotton ginned by it should nnd will command a hotter price and quicker sale than that ginned iu the ordinary manner with tiie gin* iu common use throughout the cotton States.
