Wheeling 10/A August, 1827. ' •
Gentlemen—On my return home the day
before yesterday from a journey nken for the
benefit of my health, I for the first time, read
Carter Beverley’s letter of the 11th July last,
published in the U. S. Telegraph and the re
marks made thereon by the Editor of that
Journal.—Both the text and tho commentary
give a colour to the whole transaction which
th'e facts by no means warrant. The Editor
is in a groat degree exclusivo for the view
ho took of my agencyjn that affair, as he
had no other information on the subject than
what he obtained from Mr. Boverley, and
probably was not apprised of the slight" credit
which is given to that man’s statement where
ho is best known.
J ustice to myself seems to require that a
true statement of my conduct, and an expla
nation of my motives in the affair alluded to
by Mr. Beverley, should be laid before the
public, and I ask the favour of yon, Gentle
men, to publish in your paper, this communi
cation together with the accompanying docu
ments, and I trust that you will not in this in
stance refuse to gratify an old friend and ac
quaintance.
Tho intimation I had of the receipt of Gen.
Jackson’s letter bv Cartor Beverly was convey
ed by bis note of t!ic25lhof Juno last, in which,
lie says “the very high respect which I liavo
for you nnd your political character, added to
the great zoal and interest I feel for the honor
and welfare of our country, induced me to an
nounce to you the receipt last night from Gun.
Jackson of a lettor dated the 5th inst. from his
residence in Tennessee. He most unequivo
cally confirms ail I have said regarding the o-
verture made to him ponding tho Presidential
election, and asserts a great deal more than lie
told me, going most circumstantially into the
business. It was always his intention he says,
that if Mr. Clay ever denied thoficts, to give
him up his authority. It is of tho first charac
ter and order in our government nnd country.
It only awaits Mr. CMay’s denial, when the '
whole subject will bo brought to istnejtcfore
the public. I make this communication to you
on many accounts, but especially as I under
stand Mr. Clay is to call on you this morning
and pass ait hour or two with you, on hfs way
down the river from Pittsburgh. My friend
Mr. Hollingsworth, of this place, has seen the
General’s letter. He will bear to me, any
communication from you, which, ns it is all a
public matter, 1 shall bo glad may be made in
writing.” To that letter I made the following
reply: “I have received your note of this morn
ing by Mr, Hollingsworth and request tho fi
ver of you to send mo Gen. Jackson’s letter.
I pledge myself to return it.” Mr. Beverly
immediately after the receipt of my no e, sent
mo by Mr. Hollingsworih, Gen. Jackson’s let
ter. In tho opinion of Mr. Beverly, this let
ter, was of the first ch trader und order in our
government, of a pubi c nature,-and only a-
waited Mr. Chty’s denial, nnd General Jack-
sou would g re up the name of his author; and
ho makes his commuuicition to me, “on many
accounts, but especially as I understand that
Mr. Clay is to call on you this morning.” Af
ter this voluntary parade of a highly important
document, which concerned Mr. Clay person
ally, nnd in tho opinion of Mr. Beverly himself,
involved tho character of our government, of
which Mr. C. is a member, was it not natural
that a plain man like myself, unversed in a
mode of expression, which would seem to re
serve soma meaning, foreign from the import
of the words, should adopt tho opinion that Mr.
Beverly intended tho General’s letter for the
inspection of Mr. Clay, and would h.tvo no ob
jection to a copy being taken, especially as lie
did not stipulate to the contrary? Such was my
view of tho matter /Rid I acted accordingly.
Had Mr. Boverly designed tho tho loiter for
ray private perusal, why should ho have sent
it to me at tho time Mr. Clay was expect
ed at my house? Did ho intend to furnish mo
with the means of cntcchising Mr. Clay upon
the contents of the letter, without submitting it
to his perusal, nnd thus have elicited some ex
pression which might bo used to his disadvan
tage? If such was his plan I was not acn e e—
nottgh to discern it, or if I had comprehended
it, I (rust I should not have heon sufficiently
base to have adopted it. On Mr. Clay having
visited mo, I handed him General Jackson’s
letter, which he read and returned to me, m i
king no other comments upon it than what rela
ted to the proposal ulledged to have been mado
by him and Ids friends—To thos’e he said they
were.unfoundcd,ns to himself, and he helievod
untrue tn his friends. I informed Mr, Chy
