SAYINGS OF JOSH KILLINGS.
numuie rivE.
The Stick, and String, and Spotted Trout;
Blank 1 'arse ! By Thunder ! !
Whare the dul stream,
Hnz fatted tew a pulp,
The sooty arth,
Go seek the dark skinned alder,
(A tinny for rest,)
And from the crowded growth,
Selekt a slender wand,
Tru tapering, from base, tew pinnakel,
Four yards in length
Bee it thy care,
Smoothly the bark tew cleave, from awl the pole,
Save near the springy top,
Thare leave the natiff kiwer, two feet or more,
Haply thus, the game no fear will hav,
When thwart the brook, yu stretch the reed.
Let March, with eager wind, drink out the sap,
Pendant with weights attached,
And Aprils tears beda, and Aprils smile dri up
the tears,
Thus, season well* the stick.
From broken flax, weave in dubble strength,
Twelve yards ov tuff, and tested cord,
For coil tew rest upon the waltzing reel.
A hook, chooze yu, no longer than a pin would
make,
Ov fiery temper, end like a thisel keen, '
And lest a flaw within, sleeps for betrayall,
Ov weights, lilt, four t ! mes the game.
Cunning loop the hook, az if it gru,
Tew a single snell, milk white, without ahrazure.
Three shot, divided has, cloze firm upon it,
Then artful jine to the flaxen string.
When Aprils balmec showers,
The streamlets blud has warmed,
And May, with sweet cohorts ov blushing flours,
Stands fragrant near,
Dig the rich sod for wurms,
Selekting well the bait * * *
Now hang yure string,
Eazy wurking, thru the tip, along the pole,
Sckure, upon the reddy reel.
Pigged out for royal prev,
Steal sotty with the south wind,
Toward the abrup sided stream,
N r trust yu near the bank,
Unless a friendly cloud, has sailed akro*g the
sun.
Artistik, in menny loops,
Hook on the struiriing warm,
Then drop with negligene exact, the bait,
Where fust the waters brake into a run,
Abuv the deepning hoie.
Let the glib wheeh-unwind—the line keep taut,
Until the temting bate, has swum far down the
flood,
Thare check its haste, -
And slowly draw’ with ear and hand alert,
The lushus wurm its jurcey back.
Beneath the ciustring willows shade,
Watchful he lies,
Ov awl that ventures near hiz pebbly bed,
The spotted Trout.
Dai ling—within hiz muscled thrut,
lie takes the barbed deceipt.
Steddy !! one nervus pull! !
Then gently reel him, lashing into foam,
The silver drops, against the streme,
Safe awa, from trechrons lurkin plase,
Unto the shelvy shore * * *
With landing nett transfur him tew the sod.
In tumults sweets, then feast yure ize.
Upon the changeiug buty ov the prize.
SEVEN TIMES SIX—GIVEN IN
MARRIAGE.
I>Y JEAN I NOB COW.
To bear, to nurse, to rear,
To watch and then to lose,
To see my bright ones disappear,
Drawn up like morning dew’s—
To bear, to nurse, to rear,
To watch, and then to lose,
This I have done when God drew near,
Among his own to choose.
To bear, to heed, to wed,
And with thy lord depart,
In tears that he, as soon as shed,
Would let no longer smart—
To bear, to heed, to wed,
This while thou didst I smiled,
For now it was not God who said.
4 Mother, give me thy child.”
Ob, fond ! oh, fool! and blind !
To God I gave with tears,
Eut when a man. like grace would blind ?
God guards in happier spheres,
That man will guard where he did find,
Is hope for unkngwn ytars.
To hear, to heed, to wed—
Fair lot that maidens choose,
Thy mother’s tenderest words are said,
Thy face no more she views—
Thy mother’s lot, my dear,
She doth in naught accuse,
Her lot to bear, to nurse, to rear,
To love, and then to lose. .
Pcrchasing a Horse.— Few persons
are acquainted with the mode of judg
ing a horse by the teeth. As the lesson
can be learned by rote in a few minutes,
intending purchasers will do well to
commit ft to memory. At two years
o’d the horse sheds the two middle
teeth of the under jaw; at three years
o and he sheds two other fe teeth, one at each
side of those shed the year before; at
four years old he sheds the two remain
ing or corner teeth; at five years old the
two middle teeth are full, being no long
er hollow, as the others are‘ and the
teeth will have penetrated tbe gums; at
six years old the four middle teeth are
full, the corner ones only remaining hol
low—the tusks are sharp, with the sides
fluted; at seven years old the comer
teeth are full, the tasks larger and thick
er, and the horse is said to be aged.—
Occasionally, however, these marks will
slightly vary, a good deal depending on
the arnffial’s constitution, whether he be
a late or an early foal; also upon the
manner in which he had been reared, the
kind of food, shelter, &c.
