From Schofield's command on the line

[From the Richmond Whig, March 7.]
Since the newspapers, in compliance
the request of the nrlitary autbor:-
ues. have suspended the publication of
Mar news, the people have become more
tg(rer than ever for information from the
localities of active operations. All sorts
of rumors, layorable and otherwise, are
nut into circulation, thnplified, contra
dicted and reasserted, until a perfect
muddle prevails, and nobody knows
whether events are progressing satisfac
torily or adversely. The usual sources of
information—the newspapers—are look
ed to in vain, and the existing uncertain
•iy must, therefore, continue until the
military importance of reticence has pass
ed by or been qualified by develope
wents. When that time arrives, the press
will, we presume, be promptly notified,
m order that it may resume its vocation,
of furnishing the public with reliable in
formation from the “seats of war.” In
the meantime, if anything of interest
transpires which can be published, we
are confident that the intelligent Secre
tary of War will cause the news to be
promptly communicated to the press.
Washington, March 9.—The law pro
viding for recruiting in States in rebel
lion for the benefit of loyal States is re
pealed by the twenty-second section of
the act, approved March 9, 1865, and the
Provost Marshal General has notified the
mustering officers, commandants of ren
dezvous and department commanders
accordingly.
Mr. George W. Harrington has ten
dered his resignation as Assistant Secre
tary of the Treasury. He did the same
thing when Mr. Fessenden went into the
Treasury. The latter invited him to stay;
if is generally expected that Mr. McCul
loch, will accept the resignation.
It is also stated that Mr. S. M. Clark
has resigned his office of Superintendent
of the currency printing bureau.
Hkre is anew wrinkle about the Inter
nal Revenue Bill, yf which wc hear
something new almost every day. The
following paragraphs from a late number
of the New York Express .
The officers of the internal revenue
office have been visiting the stores of our
city druggists for a few days past to as
certain who are having tbeir medicines
properly stamped, and who are not. It
was found that many had neglected to
perform this duty properly, some having
articles with stamps of only half.the re
quired value, and others with no stamp
at all on them. The penalty is heavy for
this offence, if enforced, and it will be
well for all businessmen to guard against
a surprise of the kind.
All who are in the habit of receiving
packages by Express companies, lor
which they are required to affix their re
ceipts to the book of the company, must
prepare revenue stamps; the commis
sioner having decided that to every name
so transmitted, a stamp duly cancelled
bv the party receiving the package, must
he affixed.
A Great Honor.— Gen. Meade recent
ly issued an order directing that those
men who by attention to duty, efficiency
In drill, conduct on the march and in
battle, and care of arms, horses and
equipments, proved themselves to be the
best soldiers in the brigades to which
they were attached, should he granted a
fivdough of twenty-five days. On the
-Ist inst. an inspection of the brigade et
t-acLed to headquaiters was made, when
Sergt. Patten, 3d Pennsylvania cavalry, i
and Private Geo. H. Minchen, Ist Mas- j
chusetts cavalry, were awarded the high
honor of being the best soldiers in the
brigade.
ir is mighty convenient to be a Legis

backs, so as to have the say whether

QOLDEN ALE..
Written when times were dull, find Golden Ale
wanted a market—many years ago.
What’s the world to a man without children aud
wife,
lie may toil, he may strive, the whole length of
his life.
Let him drink Golden Ale, and his spirits ’twill
cheer, ,
Till the glow on his cheek draws some kind
creature near.
Let him drink Golden Ale, and soon wedded
he’ll be;
How his heart will expand when a babe’s oil his
knee;
Let him never imbibe till his spouse have a
share,
And blessings and peace will for ever be there.
The old maiden, too, had long thought to her
self,
When no kind hand was near, she must get on
the shelf;
But she tried Golden Ale, and its magical train
Brought beauty and youth to her cheek once
again.
And lovers in scores to her cottage repair,
Youth blooms on her checks and raven’s her hair,
Once again in her teens she’s the Belle of the
Vale,
And is cloatingly fond of the famed Golden Ale.
The old and the young to be hearty and hale,
Should each day imbibe of this bright Golden
Ale,
And their cedars well store for the cold winter’s
night,
As ’tis health to the sick, to the blind it is light.
