■he Government Work* in Savannah-
Presentation to Mr. Edmond Slater
by the Workmen.
On Saturday afternoon last Mr. Edmond
ifeter, Superintendent of the United States
Jachiae Shop, located at the Eastern
Vhaives, formerly known as “Miller’s Foun-
Irv,” met with a surprise of an agreeable
aiiture. A few minutes before five o'clock
all the operatives of the machine works as
sembled iu the fcarpenter shop. Mr. Slater,
[ften about to leave, having been informed
;hat lie could not go at present, quietly sub
mitted to his arrest and repaired thither.
Mr. Rufus P. Hawkes, on behalf of the
tvhite operatives, presented, in the following
remarks, a superb hunting case gold watch,
from the celebrated American Watch manu
factory of P- S. Bartlett, Waltham, Mass. :
■ “Mr. Slater, in behalf of the employees
o this Department, I have the pleasure to
ireseut a watch as a token of our
ligh appreciation for your ever kind atten
iou and gentlemanly bearing towards us.
Lndin Injure, as you observe life’s fleeting
iours indicated upon the tlial of this
vateb, please remember U 9 as your true
■fiend sand well*wishers for your future
leaitli aqd prosperity.”
Mr. Slater responded and thanked the op
tatives for their kindness, stating that he
lever found more able and willing men than
1$ had working for Government under his
mpervision.
Charles E. Middleton, for many years con
lected with Miller's Foundry as a pattern
taker, on behalf of the colored operatives
resented Mr. Slater in a highly creditable
isnner and with true expressions of friend
hip, a fine gold chain.’
The watch bears the following inscrip
lon. “Presented to E. Slater, Chief of Ma
ine Engineers, by the employees of the Gov
rnrnent Works of Savannah, Ga., Aug. Ist.
BGS-” After the presentation, Messrs. Chas.
Felsh and Wm. Solt furnished the liquids in
bundance and all who were present depart
ii from the works with good wishes tor Mr
later.-
Iu connection with this little affair
t is proper for us to state that imme
liately after the city w T as captured by Gen.
Sherman, Mr. Slater came to Savannah and
ook charge of the works of. which he is Su
>eiintendent. Not a tool nor a lathe was
>n the premises, the Confederate authorities
raving removed or destroyed them. By Mr.
Hater s exertions all that was required to
Inake nearly a complete shop was secured.
By making known that he desired to se
ure the services of mechanics located in Sa
vannah, and who had her interests at heart, he
ioon was able to show a force of men ready
md willing at all hours to comply with all
requests made upon them.
The first work done by local mechanics
was on the Philadelphia, and the mechanics
irere Paul Bulger, Wm. Carr aud Wm. C.
Saruham, Machinists-, James J. McKenzie,
toiler Maker and Blacksmith. Next followed
;he necessary repairs on the steamers Jeff.
Davis and Gen. Lee, captured from the Con
federates. Mr. Slater has at present under
bis supervision at the Government Works,
about one hundred and seventy-five men.
