LOCAL MATTERS. Tfce Clotiug Exercises at the Grammar Schools. The closing exercises at the Public Gram mar Schools took place yesterday. The ex ercises were exceedingly interesting and were attended by the Board ot Education. Jlajor W. C. Manning, Superintendent of Public Schools, Mayor Arnold and other dis tinguished gentlemen visitors, parents and friends. The Girls’ Grammar School was as sembled in the Boys’ Grammar School room. The examination, conducted by Mr. J. F. Cann, the Principal, passed off finely. The declamations were likewise very creditable, and the singing under the direction of Mr. J. H. Newman, teacher of music, was no ticeably fine. At the conclusion of the exercises short addresses were made to the scholars by sev eral of the gentlemen present, at the invita tion of Mr. Cann. Rev- Mr. McCrae made a few pleasing remarks, coupled with some excellent advice to the children. Dr. Ar nold followed in a similar strain, and also Rev. Mr. Landrum, of the Board of Educa tion. Mtyor W. C. Manning concluded the exercises in a brief and appropriate speech, and after the singing of the closing hymn and the benediction, the schools were dismissed in high spirits for the long vacation. 'JX) THE PATRONS OF THE PACIFICATOR. 2H| The suspension of The Pacificator, the only Cath olic Journal in the South, has been caused by circum stances arising mainly from want of meana to defray the expense of publication. Tills announcement is made with extreme regret, but, relying upon the deep interest and the generous support heretofore extended both by the Clergy and Laity of the Church, as well as upon the liberal pa tronagp received from the members of other denomi nations, we sincerely trust (he suspension will only be of a very brief duration. In the present condition of the country, it is of par amount importance that the Church should have an organ in the. South for the dissemination of Catholic Doctrines, and the defence of Catholic Teachings and Practices. The sudden, radical and unexpected changes which have taken place in the organization of Southern in stitutions, political, religious and social, make the support of a Catholic Journal In this section an im perative duty on the part of each and every member of the Church. If then the Catholics of the South desire the publi cation of this Journal continued let them go to work without delay in its behalf, and so soon as a sufficient number of renewed subscriptions are received it will again be regularly issued. The past tone of The Pacificator, Religious, Polit ical, and Literary, will be its best recommendation, and a guarantee of its future conduct, Mr. L. T. Blomc having withdrawn from the con cern, the paper will hereafter be conducted solely by the subscriber, who earnestly appeals to the Catholics of the south, and to all others friendly to the cause, to sustain Tub Pacificator by a liberal patronage. The Catholic Cieigv throughout the South are-au thorized to receive subscriptions. tdf" Publication will be resumed aa soon as the par ties whose names are now on the books renew their subscriptions.
