lo € AL MATTERS* THE QUARANTINE REGULATIONS. of £lo° Imposed by Gen. Braunan. . the past week two schooners from the West I'. tue j u ua and the Mary Agnes, one of them from E .. u S. P-, arrived at this port, and were detained *•' ,j * ttie p. s. schooner, Racer, which had been Tiered to the health oitlcer of Savannah by Admi eiftadford for a Quarantine vessel, %nd was station -1 v xyliee in that capacity. While the two vessels d i ivmg under the guard of the Racer, staying out fe ; t j lirty dap of quarantine, the commander of the he ' ieC eived orders from the Admiral to report to :a "immediately. The Racer accordingly departed, ltL ;a e quarantine station was left without a guard “a ‘ T ue Julia and the Man- Agnes, taking advan ‘ of the opportunity, left quarantine and came up without orders or permission from the ’ 7th officer, and in defiance of the quarantine reg or.s. The Julia immediately ordered back oqiarantine, and was towed down to Tybee the -m" day. The Maty Agues, however, had fulfilled •r time at quarantine, and although she had come i h» city without orders, the official order for her , ea g 6 uot having yet reached her. The Captain was Emitted to discharge his cargo on one of the lower iiirves. B>sid 'i being charged with violation of quarantine dilations in coming to the city, the Captain of the arv Agues was also Complained of for having gone ihore at Tybee with his boat, while under quaran ue. a proceeding which is specially prohibited by larantine ruels. Upon this ground, Gen. Brannan sued an order on Saturday for the arrest of the iiptain.aud had him lodged with the Provost Marshal ntiialiue of SIOO should be paid. The fine was ibsequeutly paid by the consignees of the Mary gnes, and the Capstain released. The order of Gen. raunolu uponthis matter, will be found In another luma. BRIVAL OF THE UNITED STARTS. ortliern Dates to the Evening of the 26th. The steamship United States, one of the additional earners on the Star line, Messrp. Brigham & Bald in, agents, arrived here yesterday afternoon from ew York. ’ A list of passengers and consignees appears in an ber column. « We are indebted to Purser Charles E. Burke, for rv full files of all the leading New York papers, eluding those of the evening of the 26th. We give e most important news this morning. New Saw-Mill in Operation. We are glad to learn, as an indication of the re vi al of busines of all kinds in Savannah, that Mr. Wm. lose and Mr Thomas Arkwright, for many years well nown here as the proprietors of Rose & Arkwright’s ■on and brass foundry and machine shop, have com leted a saw-mill at the foot of Zubly street, near the avanuab and Ogeechee canal, me? have named it the “ Pioneer Saw-mill.” The raiding is 95 feet long and 24 wide, iris supplied •ith a 30-horse power ingine, with adequate boiler specify, and machinery with all modern improve tents. The mill Is now in active operation, and the pro rietors are ready to deliver lumber of any kind or Intensions, in large or small quantities, at reasona >le prices. They also advertise for; timber as it ar rives in this market. ' We have spoken thus fully in regard to this enter prise because it is an important one, and will en- Dourage other improvements in business. Messrs. iosp & Arkwright will actually employ less than ;wenty men, but their business will result in giving tmployment'to hundreds, in various lines, from base who’cutjhe timber lor which a demand is thus treated, to the carpenters and others whose labor Vifi l)e brought in requisition by the putting of the umber in the market. Congress Water lias a world-wide reputation as i mild catliartic, in many cases having all the good [ffects of more powerful medicine, with iione ol the injurious results to the system. Israel R. Seal.v A Jo., rd 207 Bay street, between Barnard and Jetfer lon, has the genuine article for sale. Steamer Jeff. Davis.—This steamer, which needed nany repairs, is now very nearly ready to resume ler trips to Augusta, etc. This transport is well mown, and under her careful Captain, J. Henry, ind Chief Engineer T. L. Carter, has now a good ■pputatlou. All who have travelled on the Jeff. Davis can testify to the courtesy of her olticers. The Flag of our Country.—For many days a Tattered and tom flag of America was displayed 'rout the south east comer of Bay and Habersham streets, from a stable erected hy Martin Duggan and William Black. Capt. F. W. Latham on Friday last tattled down the battered flag and hauled to the top if Jhe staff anew flag ma,de according to regula tions. Dead Body Found.—Saturday last the hotly of Pat rick Jackson, alias Harry Robertson, a colored man, tvas found lying on the side of the Ogeechee Road, ft Sait Water bridge, eight miles from the city. J ?ae relatives of the deceased yesterday morning buried the body. It appears that Patrick, hired himself to an offlder of one of the Regiments, that a few days since left Savannah for the interior. Having been afflicted with the Small Pox and taking cold, it terminated in Dropsy. While proceeding with the Regiment, he Was protracted near tUe spot were his body was lOUIUI. Ice.— The stock of ice in the houses of Messrs. Hay vood, Gage & Cos., ou Bryan, South Broad and Ab ercoru streets, being nearly exliaused. they were compelled to close their doors to the retail trade on Saturday. Messrs. Cheesraan & Marshall's ice House, on Drayton street was on Saturday and yesterday Completely over run. Yesterday from four o’clock U 1 k te a ° ur 1110 evenla S Major John H. Gould, tire business Agent for the South, and Mr. George W. Smith, the Agent for the City of Savanna, hof Messrs. Cheesman a Marshall, were put to their trumps, yet no one departed without being served. . Tlie Ice furnished by this bouse is from the Ken beuec River. Two vessels per day leave their ex pensive ice houses contalalug cargoes for ports South «f the Potomac. 0 I iiie hrm also- supplies Charleston, Hilton Head, Wilmington N. C., Mobile, New Orleans l ot her points. Should their stock in Savannah require replenishing they will have forwarded am ple su PpUes from Head and Charleston. T“E Burst District Warner’s Car riaoe ’- a ro ee Rebciit Immediately. The aa extensive Carriage manufactory of Mr. “‘“ m " arner, situated on the south cast comer of and West Broad streets, which was des t'j.'eu oy Die on the night of the great conflagration, * ordered to be rebuilt. Mr. Warner has received ® r j' ers lr °th his friends in the North to immediately e ,uUf| his extensive works. They will cover two ots ’ I -° feet fronting on Broughton street, and 90 l et on tvest Broad street. Mr. Warner has usually employed about sixty men in his establishment.— Die Cumber when hi3 works are completed will be ®wut 150 of iron and wood workers, laborers, etc. ” e iearu that parties in this city are anxious to purchase lots in the brunt district with a view to •h-flUdUtely building on the same. The Orphan's Home op the Episcopal Chtrch— Established Fifteen Years ago.— Generosity and devotion to the claims of humanity form the most beautiful element in the female character. They have battled for well-nigh two thousand years in at { vocacy otall that calls in the Influence of christianlty or engages the better feelings of the human heart. The action of woman bears the seal of reality—the stamp of all that can reflect credit upon the beings of earth. It is not therefore strange, that we speak in aid of a cause in which they have so devotedly en rolled themselves. The Orphan's Home, of which Mrs. Thos. Wayne is now first directress, was incorporated by the Georgia Legislature in the year IS5*. this Interim it has been supported by such assist ance as could be rendered by private contributions and benifleent societies ; but the liberal patronage hitherto extended through this medium to the Home must be suspended, and if not kept up by those whose assistance will justify them iu espousing its cause it must go down inevitably, it has now pro portionally from 12 to 15 inmates, male and female, taken without regard to religious creeds, under its auspicies. Heretofore beneficiaries bringing no remunerative supplies to the Home have been much grogter, and without immediate assistance Horn private contributions those in charge will be compelled to submit' the whole to the liberality of society. In consequence of a suspension of the Government supplies, John L. Villanga has given them a tierce of rice, and we hope this generoqs ac tion may be emulated by others of our prominent citizens. Their • evident destituNbn appeals in elo quent terms to all who are lovers of charity or friends to the oause of suffering humanity, and we feel assured that the call will not be made in vain. The action of the female members during the memorable epedemic in 1854 will arouse universal admiration through such assistance as could be rendered by the female managers; The orphans were removed to Springfield, and their property cared for until suitable arrangements could be made for their returns. The Georgia Central Rail Road and its Con tractors—The people of Savannah have suffered greatly by the destruction of their railroads, and the work of repairs going on are very gratifying. With in the next two weeks, should no interfer ence occur, the Eastern end of the Georgia Central road will lie so far completed that Savannah and Augusta will be placed in connection by thirty hours of travel. The contractors hope soon to complete their work which is accomplished under many hardships. Many new ties are required to replace those destroy ed by fire or which have rotted. 'They can only be obtained from the forests near the road, and we un derstand iu some instances, objection is made to their cutting them. It seems to ns the owners of timber along the line should encourage the recon struction to the full extent of their ability. We understand that, should the contractors be In terfered with, the railways they are rebuilding will not lie completed for many months, for no person can be found to accept a contract under the circum stances. The Weather Yesterday was more comfortable khan for some time pass A strong and refreshing breeze prevailed nearly all day. The thermometer stood as follows; at 7a. m., 80 ; p. at., 90; lr. m. 88. Virginia Minstrels— We call attention to the advertisement of a concert this evening by this old anO original company, at gt. Andrew’s Hall. COMMERCIAL. Savannah Cotton Market.
