Counsel for Jeff. Davis.— TheNew York
Herald of the 2d inst. says—
According to common report there is a
movement on foot in the city, among the
friends, personal and political, of the late
President Jeff. Davis, now in durance vile,
to secure for that personage the ablest coun
sel in the country for his defence, before
whatever tribunal he may be brought tor
trial. The proceedings of the committee
are thus far quite informal and* the organiza
tion not entirely complete, but enough has
developed to show that Davis has a number
of ardent friends and supporters here, in of
ficial positions, and in the profession, who
will do all they can to hasten the day of his
trial and secure the best legal talent to ap
pear in his behalf.
From Cairo.— New Orleans dates to the

Maximilian is expected at Matamoras soon.
Gen. Migia has forbid all persons leaving
Matamoras without a pass, or crossinsinto

Acting Attorney General, Mr. Ashton, has
directed the United States District Attorney
for the Northern District of Florida, to sus

tised to take place al Jacksonville on the

is to enable the District Attorney to consult
with Governor Marvin in regard to the con

in prosecuting tbe cases by the opinion of
the State Executive.
Census Statistics.—From among thecom
narative census statistics, now in preparation
for publication, the following interesting
figures are obtained': In 1860 the value of
wool in tbe raw was estimated at $36,586,254;
the cost of manufacture was figured at
$9 808 254 and the total value of the manu
factured article was placed at $61,863,097.
In tbe estimation of cotton in 1860 tbe value
of tbe raw material was held at $57,285,534;
tbe cost of its manufacture was placed at
$23,945,108, and tbe total valuation of tbe
manufactured product was estimated at
$115,685,774.
The New Orleans Picayune thinks that
tbe quantity of sugar that will be produced
in Louisiana this year will not much exceed
the crop of 1863, 10,000 to 11,000 hogsheads.
