Johnson is assisted by Capt.'Joseph Morgan, late of the Steamer Lawton, and by Capt. Robert Wallace, both careful and skil ful gentlemen, experienced In river navigation. Surgeon Snow anil other physicians were called, but too late to save her life. She expired at eight o’clock Saturday morning, having been insensible from the time of taking the poison. A quarrel with a lover Is believed to have occasioned the act. Gen. Davis has issued an order forbidding the sale of poisons, except on the prescrip tion of a respectable physician. PERSONAL.—The numerous friends of our worthy host, Coolidge, of the Marshall House, will be shock ed to learn that he had the misfortune, at the recent opening of ids billiard saloon, to have his 1 knocked out by a double-barrelled pun. The Western Citizen, published at Paris, Kentucky, says _tbe stampede of negroes from that sectiorfiof Kentucky is enormous. Au announcement having been made that tbe military authorities at that post would is sue iree passes to the negroes, the headquar ters of the commandant were thronged with applicants, and on the 24th ult, the multi tude increased, the roads being literally filled with them. They came afoot, in wagons, and on horseback; the young and the old, the sick and the well, all eager f&r the inval uable pass that was to serve as a safe con duct from slavery to freedom. The pass runs in this form, and, when issued, was en dorsed, “To go to Cincinnati, Ohio.” “ Headquarters, U. S. Forces,) Paris, Ky., , 1865. > “ To all ivhom it may concern: “In pursuance of General Orders No. 49, Headquarters Department of Kentucky, July 10, 1865, , (colored), is author ized to pass at will in search of employment. “All public carriers will respect this pass. 44 _____ “ Commanding U. S. Forces at Paris, Ky.’ A brisk business must have been done; for in fire days, one thousand three hundred passes, averaging four persons to each pass, had been issued. The same excitement was witnessed at Lexington and- other points in the State, where passes had been issued un der Gen. Palmer’s order. It is probable that not less than twenty-five thousand negroes left Kentucky last w r eek, under passes ena bling them to go at will in search of employ ment. It is stated that the Kentucky exodus tends to Ohio. It remains to be seen whether the Buckeyes will receive this immense emigra tion of blacks into the bosom of their pros perous commonwealth. Horrible Matricide. —A Ml'S. Starkweath er and her daughter, a young girl aged four teen, were, on Tuesday morning last, found murdered in their beds in Oakland, a village about six miles from Hartford, Conn. The bodies presented a horrid sight, the victims having been literally chopped to death with an axe, and stabbed in many places with a butcher's knife. The son of the murdered woman was arrested on suspicion of having committed the horrible act, to obtain posses sion of four hundred dollars, which was found in his drawer, together with the knife which he is supposed to have used in mur dering his mother and sister. The Rebel Cotton Loan in England.— The rebel cotton loan at last dates was sell ing in Jxmdon at eight pounds ten shillings sterling for one hundred pounds of stock.— The loan, it will be recollected, amounted to two millions five hundred and fifty-six thou sand 9ix hundred pounds, or over twelve and a half millions of dollars. It was negotiated "at sixty to ninety pounds on the hundred, to bear seven per cent, interest, and redeemable in 1883 at par, or to be paid previous to that time in cotton at sixpence per pound.
