local matters. Violent Gale.—Rnln and Thunder Storm. A littlfc before four o’clock yeMeffday afternoon our tlty was visited wild Hie moat violent tntle of wind from tlie Norte-East that we have experienced this reason. Fortunately it was of brief duration, tor had it continued many minutes. Increasing in violence as it did, we would have had it repetition of the scenes which accompanied the great tornado of the yellow fever season in ISM, so well remembered by ourciti yeus of that clay. The gale yesterday was without (iremouition, aud increased in violence while It last ed, the ruin descending in torrents and soon flooding many of our streets from curb to curb, while the thun der and lightning was for a time incessant and terriflle. The lightning struck the wire of the I'nited Rates Military Telegraph connecting with Fort Pnlaski and Hilton Head, and did it great damage. The fluid passed in the operator’s room, which is located in the Exchange building, knocking •gown a consider able portion of the ceiling. The Stoddard Block, on the north side of Bay street, seems to have been m the track of the heav iest part of the gale. A large portion of the tin rooting, with the rafters and sheathing of the north east gable of the building, and a considerable por tion of the cornice, was blown oil' and thrown to the oppositie side of Bay street, at the corner of Drayton street. The eastern end of the block, occupied by Mt. Edward Padeltord, was flooded with water, as was also tlie adjoining tenement, occupied by Mr. James Leary. Freni the extensive damage of tlie building, no doubt other suffered more or less injury front tlie water apt! the breaking ' of the windows fronting on the river. Throughout the city tfte shade trees, fences, Ac., were damaged more or less. Many trees were blown down, and the streets, after the storm, were strewn with fallen limbs. Our reporters were unable after tlie storm to as certain tlie extent of the damage to property in the city and suburbs. Wo have not as yet heard of any cases of injury by the lightning. Tlie prayer of the petitioners was heard and granted. The new charter is a verbatim copy of the original charter. The Hon. Philip M. Bussell, President and First Foreman, called tlie meeting to order, and in a few remarks stated tlie object of the meeting, expressing tlie hope that the action taken by his associates and himself would meet with the approval of the mem bers under the old charter, for when the new charter was granted many of them were engaged in the armies of tlie Confederacy and were net aware of tlie intentions of the President and his associates.
