Tidaal who claimed to be one of the Smith family—
not John Smith, but Henry Smith, from New York,
took lodgings at the Pulaski House about a week ago,
representing himself to be largely interested In tl.e
cotton business. Mr. Smith had Just returned from
the interior, where he had made large purchases of
the great staple, which he designed shipping to his
house In New York. Mr. Smith lived, moved and
put on the airs of a gentleman of large means. Mr
Smlth purchased a large stock of goods for his house
in Florida, and engaged a clerk for that concern,
whom be also boaidedjat the hotel until he should
complete his business arrangements here.
Mr. Smith was short of ready change to pay a
t&lance of freight—only fifteen dollars on seventy
£ye bales of cotton. Mr. Smith borrowed that
umount for a few minutes from anew made acquain
tance, since which time Mr. Smith ha9uot been seen.
It U suptffcsed Mr. Smith left for Charleston, but In
the hurry of business, Mr. Smith forget to payhu
hotel bill or to pay hU little accommodation. No
cotton lias arrived here for Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith la
no doubt an accomplished financier of the modem

Philadelphia and Savannah Steamship Line.—
Messrs. Hunter 1 Gammed announce the steamship
Minnetonka to sad from this port for Philadelphia
on Saturdny next. The Minnetonka Is a first class
ship, of 1,000 tons burthen, with elegant accommo
dations for passengers, and wld be an Important ac- ■
quftltlon to our steam marine. The trade and travel
rapidly Increasing between this city and Philadelphia
will, we have no doubt, yield handsome returns to
her enterprising owners.
anothfk New Steahkb Bcilmno.—We learn
that a ship yard has been erected oa the Ocmulgee
ilvev. and that the keel of a river steamer has been
laid. The engines and boiler are ready, and, should
no accident occur, the steamer wld be launched In
time for the winter trade. The materials used In the
construction of this steamer are of superior quality.
Her frame and planking will be of oak, as also the
ceding.
Fob Flobida.— I Thursday afternoon the steamer
Helen Gelty, Capt. Ingraham, was cleared for Palat
ka, Fla., etc., by Mr. L. S. Bennett, her Agent. Our
Florida friends wdl no doubt be pleased once more
to see on the routo that staunch steamer Helen Get
ty, 7 we 9t. Johns. The accommodations are superior.
It Is the Intention of the owners of the Helen Gelty
that she shad make weekly trips.

Remarks.
At the present time there Is a limited stock of Dry
Goods offering, and prices are unchanged. The
stocks offering are not such that a merchant from
the interior would select, os the season U far ad
vanced, and the Fall patterns wIU soon be ottered.
Local sas* will therefore be restricted for a few
weeks. Sales for the Interior will 1* made, though
they will be mainly confined to goods immediately
iu demand. The following are fair quotations: De
i.inM, 46 cents per yard; Prlnta, 88 to 40 cents per
yard; Bleached cottons, 48 to 56 cents per yard ;
Unbleached Cotton3, 30 to 45 cents per yard ; Osna
burgs, 30 cents per yard.
The market for Bacon of ail descriptions Is well
supplied. Choice article 36 cents per lb, cither In
lots or by the piece.
The Cotton market presents no new features, the
rates are the same a3 last week. The receipts have
teen very good, the majority lor shipment
A3 the Savannah, Altamaha and Ocmulcee rivers
continue very low, there 13 a very limited business
doing in freights. Recently accessions have been
made of light draft steamer;, which will possibly
prove of some relief to our merchants who have
large stocks and equally large orders to fill.
The resumption of railway travel between Savan
nah and Augusta, as also tjie forwarding of goods by
the road, will greatly relieve our merchants. On
-donday morning next the trains by the Central Rati
road will connect at Station 4 X with Hacks running
so Waynesboro’, and thence to Augnstaby the Au
gusta and Savannah Railroad, savannah and Au
gnitii by this arrangement arc brought within 22
goldmarket remains 'unchanged and with a
limited demand. Silver remains scarce without

the maitet was hilly sustained. The bank rates for
selling gold was 45 per cent premium, buying 42X
to 43 H premium. Sales of gold to private parties
are reported at rates higher than those of the banks,
let all sales made'are governed principally by iffe
• amount wanted and the amount offering. 91iver
continues scarce and in fair demand. The buying
rate to unchanged, vu : 26 to 37 premium, selling at
40 per cent, premium.

Cotton Market.
The fklr Improvement noticed In our last report of
the cotton market with an advoure on the Ordinary
grades, was by transactions rully established. Stocks
withdrawn from the market were again put upon the
floors of factors and have been 9old at the prices quoted
by ns. Tue receipts for Immediate sale are light. No
embarrassment has yet been expet lent ed In thecollej
tlou of the Internal Revenue Tax, buyers aud ship
pers being aware that it waste be collected either In
New 1 ork or at this port. The only difficulty arising
from this tax is that all who ship cottou to New
York or other pons, must obtain duplicate manifest
for the same, one to tie left In the Custom House with
Us offlcla, Is with a duplicate receipt of the payment
of the tax, and the other to the Agent or Master of the
steamer or sail vessel. Unless this regulation Is
complied with, and payment or the tax made, the
steamer or sail vessel cannot obtain a clearance.—
We quote the market at last weeks rates as follows •

B*a Islands —a limited stock continues offering.
The transactions are so small that we are almost
without quotations. The general rate of purchase
from carts, etc., is 86 to 90 cents per lb. The sales

of the cotton.

General Markets.
Corn.—The market continues with a good supply,
and the demand Is moderate. Transactions are en
tirely of a local character. No large sales have been
made from store. Wo quote from store at $1 25 to
tl 30 per uushek This Is according to the quality
and quantity. Retail sales are made at a slight
advance on the above quotations.
Hat.—Our market, by late arrivals, Is gt present
well suppllod with Eastern Hay. The Imports since
la9t report are 875 hales. From the wharf we quote
*1 30 to $1 35 per cwt; from store, $1 40 to $1 60,
according to lots. Northern Hay is selling from store
at tl 10 to $l 2O.
NAll9.—Our market Is well supplied with ail de
scriptions of Nalls. The selling rate for Boonton
Naas Is from a to.6»*»per ft ; an Inferior nail can be
purchased slightly under these figures.
Wool.—A fair demand continue, with light re
celpts. We quote at 34 to 38 cents for unwashed
fleece.
Hides—Are In fair demand and receipts light. Dry
hides are selling In small lot 9 at 8 to 9 cents per lb.
There is nothing doing In Green Hides.
Veoetables.—The market continues well supplied
with all descriptions ufyegetables from the North
ern markets.
Potato S3 continue in abundance, and are selling
from store at S3 to $4 per bbl. Onions are abundant,
and we quote front store at $3 to $4 per bbl. Cab
bages by the crate {8 to $lO per hundred. Beats $3
to $ 1 per bbl. Turnlpts $2.50 to $3 per bbl.
Lard.—Oar market which was quite bare, Is again
replenished w ith neat ly all grades of the article. We
quote I.eaf at 23 to 24c. per lb., the demand is limit
ed and confined to retail dealers. There Is no Press
Lard offering.
Bctteb.—We have no change to notice In the
market The offering stock 19 adequate for present
demands. We quote Western in firkins at 35 to 37
cents, and In tubssoe. choice Goshen 37 to 40 cents
for the best. Interior or cooking Butter Is selling at
20 to 28 cent A j
Bacon.—The market continues abundantly sup
plied with all descriptions of meats. The demand Is
strictly confined to the retail city trade, many who
were of the opinion that the stock of Bacon raised by
farmers was exlraused are mistaken. Letters re
ceived, and which we have had the privilege of
reading, state that every farmer who has any w ork
to pay for Is willing to pay old prices for the work on
his ploughs, etc., In bacon and other produce at old
prices:

TiMttK.—There la an active demand far round logs
suitable for mill purposes, at prices ranging from $lO
to *l6 per M. feet, this price Is governed by the size
and length. From the adjacent Counties we have
favorable accounts of timber cutting. On the line of
the Central RaU Road many enterprising men are
now cutting their timber and the eastern end of this
great railway will, with Its limited rolling stock and
engines, be more than employed, in the transporta
tion business of passengers, timber, etc. For Oak,
Ash and Hickory timber their is a air demand
at *2O to *26 per M feet.
Pore.—Family pig Pork In half bbls. U In fair de
mand at *26 pet half bbl.
beef—Pulton Market Is la fair request for the
retail trade at (1? to tit,6o per half bbl.
Tib.—A fair request Is made fort. C. 10*14 tin
plates. Charcoal at *l6 60 per box. Roofing pates,
14*20,1. a, *l6 76. The demand Is for the local
trade and not for shipment to the interior.
COEE3E.—There is quite an abundant supply of ex
cellent Goshen Cheese offering ; the selling rate Is 18
cents p lb. by the box from store.
BUSINS.—The stock offering Is very small From
store by the box we quote at $6 75 to *6.
Fusions.—There is a fair supply of Sicily lemons
offering from store. We quote sl2 to sl2 60.
ObaßOES.—From store there Is a supply ottering
which is equal to the demand We quote p box.

Scouts.—The stock offering of all descriptions of
Bugays is ample. We quote Brown at 16 to 17 cents
plb ; Refined at 21X; Coffee Sugars, 20 cents. A
considerable sale of Brown Sugar was made from
store at 14 cents p lb.
coffee —The stock of Coffee offering is limited,
that Is, merchantable good qualifies. We quote St
Domingo at S2c. p lb.; Bio, 2lc-BSir ; Java, 3#c.@

Leather.—Feu One Hemlock Tanned the rate con
tinues unchanged, viz: 40c. ¥ lb-

Ckackbbs.—The market is well supplied with all
descriptions of crackers. We quote Butter Crackers
at 13r. P lb, hr wholesale ; Oyster Crackers, 15 to
15'»c- ?. 10. The stock offering Is ample.
Onions. — Offering stock more than ample. Great
sacrifices have lieen made by overstocking the mar
ket. The mallet or gavel of the auctioneer tuts at
public omen- knocked off several large lots at very
low rates; we quote at $3 50 to $4.
Cabbaols— The old story of an overstocked mar
ket is applicable to this vegetable. They have been
selling at various prices to-day. Good lots will
bring *l2 to *l6 hundred.
Flock.—Our market is well supplied with all
grades of Flour. The demand continues tor city
trade; few orders for shipment. Grades sot general
family use. $9 t bbl; Family, first quality, jlo to
$lO 50 ¥ bbl.
Candles.-. From .-tore, Adamantine are selling at
26 to 28c. f> tb by the box.
Boars—The stock of all descriptions offering Is
quite large- For the lower grades of Soap the rates
are 10 to 12y. cents. Colgate’s Family, 13 to 14c. (t
lb by the box.
RnrE—The market is well supplied with Kentucky
Rope, which sells at 16c. %» lb.
