STEAM MAHIA'E ON THE EXITED

All mercantile classes throughout the Uni
ted States, even those not directly in any pe
enniarv connection with the shipping in
terest, are more or less interested in our mer
chant marine, and particularly in steam ves
sels. There i9 not a prominent steamship,
sailing from any port in the United States,
the name of which is not almost a household
word in any intelligent tamily from Maine to
Texas. In Savannah there is a large com
mercial interest, and hundreds of people di
rectly or indirectly interested in the promi
nent steamers sailing under United States
colors. The following list, although we find
it to be incorrect, for instance, including the
screw steamer Fulton and omitting the side
wheel steamer Fulton, will be of great use
and interest to many of our readers. We arc
indebted for it to the New York World, and,
so far as it goes, we believe it to be acc unite:

The Great Hurricane In the Indian Scat.
The following is the letter from our Con
sul at the Society Islands concerning the
hurricane there in February last, of which
mention was the other day made in our
Washington dispatches:
Consulate of the United States at Ta->
hiti, Society Islanus, May 22, 18CQ. y
To the Hon. Secr'y of State, Washington, D. C.
I have the honor to report to you a fact ol
great importance to navigation, viz : the
work of a terrific hurricane that has visited
the Society, Harvey and Palmerston Islands,
and probably others of which I have not
yet beard.
One of the islands of the go-calicd Pal
merston group ha 9 been entirely washed
away. Nothing but coral breakers remain,
which, as they are only visible in perfectly
calm weather, will be most dangerous to
navigation. It was on this group that the
bark Julia Cobb, of Bucksport, Me., was
wrecked last November, when her crew was
taken charge of by this Consulate.
The British brig Annie Laurie, Capt. Dunn,
describes the calamity on the island os fright
ful in the extreme, and as the Captain is a
srustworthy and experienced seamen, who
has traded among the islands for many years,
and is well acquainted with the natives, I
asked him to give me some account thereof,
that it might be used for the benefit ot navi
irators. which he at once did, in terms as
follows:
“The gale commenced on the 29th of
January, when we Were in lat. 19 20 South,
long, 1(12 West, and continued till the morn
ing of Feb. 1, when the wind suddenly
changed from E. N. E. to 8. S. E , and blew
a terrific hurricane for two bour9, driving
the sea to a height of 40 or 50 feet above
bigh water mark, and completely destroying
everything within its range. The gale was
accompanied by a furious rain Sturm. On
visiting the islands, I found them in a most
deplorable state. What the sea did not de
stroy the hurricane did. ODe of the Pal
merston Islands is entirely washed away,
there being now bu s sis where there were
seven. On the remaining six the destruc
tion is complete. Every house is blown
down or washed away. Fully one half the
cocoanut trees are blown up- by the roots,
and the other half are stripped ot foliage
and fruits. The natives say they were not
able to either stand or walk during the pre
valence of the hurricane. The men joined
hands and formed circles around the women
and children, and in this manner crept about
on their knees to avoid falling trees and
houses. The islands appear as if fire had
run over them. The German bark Alster
was lost in the harbor of Apia, Navigator
Isles, during the gale.”
I have the honor also to report that we
had to experience this gale at Tahitti. Large
districts of cultivated land were overflowed,
but though considerable damage was done,
it wag not of such frightful extent us at the
Palmerston Islands. These were not of
much geographical importance, but since
the convention of one of them into a hidden
and dangerous breaker, I deemed it my duty
to report the facts for the benefit of the de
partment aud navigation.
I am. Sir. your most obedient servant,
Joseph Vandob, U. 8. Consul.
The Ami-Rent Wa* Still Raging.—We
learn trom the Albany Express that Mr.
Church. Mr. Cagger and Mr. Kidd have had
squads of the Twenty-fifth Regiment of N. Y.
. .. > with Mr. Church the Colonel, and
the Lieutenant Colonel, and Mr. Kimball, the
Adjutant, at the head, perambulating’ the
Helderbergs, to overawe the anti-renters.—
And they went out in full military style
They took oot With them their commissary
wagons loaded with provisions—pork, beet,
hams, bread, crackers, cheese, to eat ■ beer
and liquors generally to drink. And in an
old aristocrattcal fashion they quartered upon
the po-edtod tenants. Mr. Church, on,be
half of himself; Mr. Cagger and Mr. Kidd,
wa» the pilot of the party. The firat night they
billeted themselves upon the premises of old
Peter Ball. They burned his firewood, and
they cooked hla vegetables, and they lodged
in his barn, and they put an armed guard
about the place—and they ate, and they
drank, and they sang, and they swore.
