Removal of the Obstp.pctio.ns in the Savannah
River.—' We had a call yesterday, from Mr. William
Webster, of the firm of Pierce, Sanborn 4 C0.,0f Bos
ton, who visitsonr city for the purpose of
with the proper authorities for the removal dibiale
obstructions and clearing out the ship channel of
the Savannah river. The company Is the same who
raised and removed the sunken ships In the harbor
of SeiiaStapol, Russia, w hich so long defied the el
icits of European contractors. They are supplied
with ali the appliances necessary for the work, such
a steam-tugs, docks, dredges, hydraulic Jacks, div
ing bells and lanterns, uud Mr- Webster Is of the
opinion that ail the obstructions in oui harbor can
be successfully and speedily removed, and onr ship
channel greatly improved. He 13 ready to make the
necessary arrangements and proceed at once with
the work, in which he will require the assistance of
a considerable nuinlier of laborers. The vast lm
portance o f the prompt and effectual removal of the
obstructions in our harbor to the commercial inter
ests of the city need not be urged, and we sincere
ly hope that Mr. Webster’s company will be author
ized to commence ihelr operations Immediately.
With our georgraphicai position and our railroad
connections with the Interior, ail that Is needed Is
the clearing out of our ship channel to give Savan
nah decided advantage over other Southern seaports.
The sooner the work Is commenced the easier It will
be accomplished, and the sooner It \i accomplished
the better It will be for the interests of our city and
