AH Interest!*** Incident at Fort Palatial.
on Tttursdav last Capt Briggs, of the steamer •• C.
Cjunt,” was presented at Fort Pulaski, by the
commissioned officers of the 103d D. S. C. TANARUS., with a
hlitniv finished atid beautiful gold avatch and chain
as a memorial of the sincere esteem in which he is
held by the donors.
Captain B- as the commanding officer of the V. S.
Grant, which has been plying on government account
between this city and Hilton Head, has extended to
the Officers of this Regiment innumerable acts of
emurtesy and kindness, which, in the estimation of
the recipients, have distinguished him as'the genial
gentleman and accomplished Officer, and hence this
elegant sonuenir in acknowledgement or his merits.
Ihe occasion of the presentation was not rendered
more interest.!!* by the interchange of cordial expres
sions of regard and satlsfacUon by the company pre
sent than for the flow of wine, sentiment and humor
which followed the removal of the cloth after a
hearty discussion of the savory "merits of a sumptu
ous and well prepared dluuer.
7M ceremony of presentation was conducted by
iUjor Manning, who, at the conclusion of a brief and
interesting address, delivered the watch to the cap
tain, with the assurance that he would bear with him
In his going through life the warmest afffections and
pest wishes of all the Officers and civilians present.
To which Capt. 8., with a full liea# and excited
feelings replied, acknowledging his appreciation of
the honor conferred and the gratitude that fills iu his
bosom by an incident as touchingly by significant as
it was wholly unexpected.
The conclusion of the Captain's remarks was the
signal for another coup de main upon the tempting
nines and other refreshments with which the board
had been resupplied, which, we need not say, was
Accomplished in gallant style under the leadership
‘of the dashing Capt. Mulligan, whose genius for
command on such occasions has been fully estab
»d In the past hlkory of the 103d. This movement,
though successfully made, resulted In the complete
demoralization of the entire company, rank and flic,
sod a scene of straggling ensued that would have
greatly outraged the professional sensibilities of Ihe
gallant commander, had he not been, unconsciously,
a straggler himself.
Many of the company, we understand found them
, selves the succeeding morning, much to their sur
prise, In the city of Savannah, and can only account
for the change of locality by tbe supposition that
they were so fortunate as to fall Into the hands < f
Capt. Dennett, of the Sampson, who, anticipating
the untoward events that usually transpire on such
oceasioas, bad generously placed his boat iu a posi
tion to afford relief, ns the signals of distress should
meet his eye.'
it affords u« pleasure to announce, however, that
the stragglers have all returned to camp and report
ed for any similar duty, when occasion requires.
iu addition to the officers of the 103d Regiment,
whose names we give below, there were present to
witness the presentation, Capts. Conrady ami Ber
wick, and Lieutenants Totten, O’Conner and Spell
j|*j, of the iTSd New York Volunteers, and Mr. C. F.
nffsey, Mr " Jus. H. Vance and Mr. Fitzgerald, of
Savannah.
We'have omitted to mention that the watch is
neatly engraven with an inscription containing the
names of the recipient and the donors and the
date of presentation, and cost. ssco.
We return our sincere thanks for the complimen
tary notices of the HCkald on the occasion referred
to. *

FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL.
Savannah, Sept, is, iB6O. •
REMARKS.
The weather, during the past week under review,
was warm for the season, though favorable for the
transactions of out-door business. From the country
people who were in the city disposing of their pro

past week, was very active, and onr merchants seem
to have had their bands full, from Immense amount
of goods conveyed to the wharves for shipment, and
the large number of wagon trains that have departed
fully laden.
The continued advance In the New Vork market

In onr own market. Groceries have materially ad

The market, generally, presents no new features
of Interest worthy of record, and we give quotations
as follows:
