Merrily bounds the morning barh
Along the summer sea ;
Merrily mourns the morning lari:
The topmost twig on tree ;
Merrily smiles the morning rose
‘ The morning sun to see ;
And merrily, merrily greets the rose
The honey-sucking bee
But merrier, merrier far are these,
Who bring on wings of the mornlug breeze,
A music sweeter than her own,
A happy group of ioves and graces,
Graceful forms and lovely faces,
All In gay delight outflown ;
Outllown from their schoolroom cages.
Schoolroom rales and schoolroom pages,
Lovely lq their teens and tressea,
summer smiles, and summer dresses.
Joyous In their dance and song,
Willi sweet sisterly caresses,
Arm In arm they they spcedhlong.
• Autumn.
The soft calm days of autumn once again .
Have brought that lovely melaiiClmly spell,
Which binds die heart of thinking, dreaming men
With that mysterious lingering ken
Which, if it has no future tale to tell,
May turn Into forgotten past, and dwell
Ou ail its scenes of happiness and pleasure then.
And while the sun is struggling to diffuse
Its bright effulgence through the soil dim air,
i. | S not all within our power to choose
Tae many subjects of our thoughts, but muse—
in memory freed from every earg-
In thought to wonder scarcely knowing where,
yviijip subjects to tills changing, mystic, Autumn

Who lias not strolled along some sylvan stream
To hear the gentle whispering ol the tide,
WjK’n leaves were falling through the sun’s pale
beam,
flirt watched alone 'till all was like a dream ?
And 111 that dream how many to our side
Have come again, wiib gentle words to chide,
By saying, ah, howwold we all in absetfee seem I
How oft I’ve asked tlfc future if ’twere mine
To live so-geud, so upright, and so pure,
That, wlientlitslife was sinking in decline,
Tae light of Heaven would as softly shine
As this to-day, and calmly thus allure
The chastened soul to realms that shall endure,
Where all-is like the God who made it—all divine.

CKPROrO&ED ASSAULT*.
A Woman Attacked in tlie Street end
Dangerously Stabbed by a Stranger--
Arrest of tin* Assassin.
At an early hour on Tuesday night a most
fearful and entirely unprovoked assault was
cio.de on Mrs. Elizabeth Colerdau, a respect
able and inoffensive female, by a blood
thirsty ruffian name Thomas Lynch. It ap
pears that at about 9 o clock on Tuesday
night, Mrs. Coleman was quietly walking
along First avenue, accompanied by Mr.
Thomas Sanderson, residing at No. 385
Avenue B, and wheu near Seventeenth Bt.,
Lynch came up behind her and stabbed her
in the head with a sharp knile, inflicting a
terrible wound, extendingTrom the top of the
head to the bottom of tbe 'right check, com
pletely severing the car. He then plunged
the knife into her back, between her shoul
ders, inflicting another terrible and danger
oub wound. Mrs. Coleman sank to the
pavement, and as Lynch was about to stab
her again, .Sanderson knocked him on tbe
sidewalk. An alarm was at once raised and
Officer Young, of tbe Eighteenth precinct
was soon on the spot, and took Lynch into
custody. Mrs. Coleman, who had fainted
from the pain and loss of blood, was taken
up and conveyed to the Bellevue Hospital
where she is now under treatment. She is m
a very critical state, and it is feared that the
wounds may prove iatal. Lynch w*s taken
to the Eighteenth precinct station-house and
locked up for the night. He tears the repu
tation of a desperado, and has been twice
arrested—once for stabbing an officer and
a;ain lor stabbing his wife. In explanation
ot his fiendish conduct Lj-jich stated that he
was partially intoxicated, and mistook Mrs
Coleman for bis wife, whom he had suspect
«and of carrying on a flirtation with a strange
male companion, and on the impulse of the
moment determined to be revenged. Hence
his attack on Mrs. Coleman. Lynch was a
perfect stranger to tbe persons whom he at
tacked, as were they to him, and there was
not the slightest provocation for the attack
Lynch, who is forty-one years of age, was
arraigned before Alderman Flynn, pi adding
at the Jefferson Market police court, who
committee him to prison to await the result
of the injuries to Mrs. Coleman.— Philadelphia
