Asi( iacu>u« Attempt to Bob a Farmer or
bis Cotton
laesday evening last, a tanner irom up iho river,
granger in Sarannan, hired a negro drayman to
- rev to lrU factor two bales of cotton, which had
~een landed froaa a flat at the Hydraulic Cotton
p rcSg Eastern Wharves. The drayman started from
tltc press with the cotton; but finding, while ascend
lug the Gas House hill, that the stranger was not in
sight, he concluded to become a cotton merchant on
a small scale, and, accordingly, drove his merchan
dize through East Broad street to the vicinity of
Broughton street, where lie offered to sell the sup
• , 03 ed small prize lot of cotton. Several purchasers
were present, the bidding was very spirited, and It
"aemed certain that the cotton would be purchased
at a bargain. In this the buyers and the cotton
thief were to be disappointed. Several young gen
tlemen who are employed at Lamar’s and the Hv
draullc Press coming up, noticed what was golug
on, an l one of them recognized the drayman—
While making the necessary Investigations, the cot
ton buyers and the negro cotton merchant vamoos
ed the merchant abandoning his dray and stock of
estton.
The captors of the stolen property drove the team
to the rolice Barracks, and had the pleasure on
Wednesday morning or returning to a poor and wor
thy farmer all the property he possessed wherewith
to purchase supplies for his family.

Anniversary of the Day of atonement.—The
Day of Atonement, Torn heepur, a most important
day the Jewish calender, commences tilts evening
and lasts until sundown to-morrow. The day will be
very generally observed by Israelites of this city.—
The synagogue at the Armory Halt commences
Divine Service at 6 P. M., Rev. Simon Gerstman offi
cial lag.
The origin of the Day of Atonement Is the setting
apart a day, at the command of the Lord, for the
expiation of the sins of the year. During the period
when the nationality of the Jews nourished, the an
nual return of the day was celebrated with much
ceremony and pomp, the High Priest entering the
Holy of Holiness, to atone for the nation, attended
by 24X00 priests.
The Theatre.—The lovers ol the drama will ob
serve with much gratification that the Theatre will
be opened on Saturday evening next, with a piece
of so high a class as the sterling old comedy of
“London Assurance.” The fact that a play so ex
acting in Its requirements Is put up for the opening
night, shows unqualified confidence is felt by the
managers In the powers of their company. We sin
cerely hope that they and the public, long thirsting
for theatricals w orthy of their patronage, are not to
be disappointed.
