IBS GPSMNO OF TH* D**ff*Tii SEASON —Tu nl*ht
it the evemu* fixed upqu bjr the new h-sci-a ol the
Savannah Theatre for the Inauguration a the Pall
f ßd Winter season. We hope to see a crowded In. u>y
to the appreciation in which the endeavor to
provide dramatic entertainments of a respectable
sort, is held. The theatre has been renovated and
redecorated with a liberal hand, and we are assured
an excellent company is engaged. The formalopen
inr will be marked with the delivery of an opening
vddreas, which has been written for the occasion by
s well-known literary gentleman or this city,
Tai Damage TO the Steamer Chatham.—The
imount of injury sustained by the Steamer Chatham
on her trip to Doctortown having been considerably
exaggerated by the flying reports which have reached
the city, we give what we have learned from a trust
worthy authority In regard to the matter.
The Steamer is not, as we are Informed, seriously
damaged in any part except in her bottom, the re
cponslbility for which injury rests upon both Captain
and pilot. There is no question as to the boat having
been badly used, repeatedly run ashore upon sand
liars— although there was plenty of water lu the river.
She was finally snagged when arrived near Doctor
town but succeeded in reaching that place, where the
now lies undergoing the necessary repairs. She will
probably resume her place on the route in three
VTCPK3’ time-
steamship Raleigh,—Hits new aud elegant
steamship, commanded by Capt. Geo. M. Walker,
will leave Savannah to-day at 3 o'clock, on her
return trip to New York. The Raleigh
i, the only side-wheel steamer new plying
between Dili port and fcew York, and is in every
revpect one of the finest .ships that has ever been
employed In the trade between the two cities. Her
cabins' and state-rooms are fitted up in the
most elegant style—the latter, especially, hav
.... t] . e most thorough venttlatlon, and
veins in every way adapted to promote the com
fort of passengers. Capt. Walter 13 a most courteous
gentleman and experienced seaman, and is favor
ably known as the Commander of the ocean steamer
Fulton, which recently plied between New York and
Hilton Head. Captain W. and his ship have made a
very favorable impression here, and will no doub t
enjoy a liberal share of the patronage of shippers and
the navallng public.
THE Unarmed Lady.—Miss Leake, the young lady
horn without arms, of whom we spoke in our issue
oi yesterday, gave her first Levee in St. Andrew’s
ilail yesterday, and was visited by a considerable
number of ladles and gentlemen, who were not
only astonished and entertained by her wonderful
performances, but were most favorably impressed
by her gentle simplicity of character. She is a most
estimable young lady, and in her efforts to aid her
aged parents in the day of their dependence, has the
sympathy of all who appreciate the obligations of
filial duty and affection. She will give a second
reception at St. Andrew’s Hall to-day.
New Firm.—Attention is directed to the card of
Messrs. G. B. and G. \V. I.amar, announcing their as
sociation in the General Commission Forwarding and
shipping Business in this city, under the firm name
of G. B. i G. W. Lamar. These young gentlemen are
well known In this city and Augusta, where they
have had experience In business. We feel confident
that commissions confided to them will be transact
ed with Judgment, promptness and fidelity.
Personal.—The steamer Empire City which ar
rived at Hilton Head on Tuesday, brought as Purser
Mr. Tim. McManus, well known and widely popular
a« Piiner of the V. S. transport steamship Fulton
lor a long period. We are glad to be once more
indebted to him for favors.
AnstVAl erom Nassau, N. P.—The British schoon
er Albert, Riordnn, arrived yesterday from Nassau,
X. P, with an assorted cargo, consigned to Beil,
Willy ,t Christian.
