JO CAL MAT TUB S. The OptulOf ■( the UTannth Theatre. It u wan pleasure mat we recent the complete end triumphant success of the opening it the Theatre on Saturday evening. The house w»i weU filled at an jjrtr hour, and at the rtwng of the enrtain an unor ctipiedaeat was hardly to be round. The audience conjprbed me beat classes of our cltteeiia and many idle- and with the fresh touches of decoration and remi ration observable on all sides the Theatre pre sented a decidedly brilliant appearance. The rem- Lant vet left us of oar Justly prized Savannah Or chestra with Prof. Hie liter at its head, furnished ad mirable music until the curtain rose for the opening address, which we give in full. It was spoken by M l s . M. E. Gordon, with taste aud spirit, and the fclicitousness of the composition, and the tout etv j em Die of the lady, were such as to give the audio uce a keen zest of what was to follow r OPESIHO ADDRESS. Tor tour long years. War’s red and mailed hand Has smitten terror through the weeping land ; Brothel- 'gainst brother arrove, tether ’gainst son, aud Grief alone survived each battle won. L „ , vh erc the teeming fields in beauty smiied, There reigns a desolation dark and wild : lu the loved scenes, which Memory endears. Sorrow sits shedding unavailing tears ; Aud from the fields with blood and carnage red, Art shrank aiTrighted and tne Drama lied. The storm has pasaed-war’s lurid lightnings cease, Ami yield the sky serene to white-robed reace— smiling she comes, of Heaven’s fair gifts the best, Le tiling the weary pilgrim to his rest, Beck’uing the Joys, which follow In her train, Ami which appear to cheer us once again. First among these, the Drama, bright and chaste implores you to forget the mournful past- And seek” she cries, "oil, cherish, I Implore Those pleasures whiclt 1 tendered you of yore. E -hold In me, in me you ever find rood for the heart and treasure for the mind ; I place within your grasp the magic rare That cheers the soul, removes harness lug care; Sways each emotion with resistless pow’r, And wreaths with Bowers bright each passing hour. Where'er ray shrine Its height majestic rears, I pour a ceaseless fount or smiles and tears— Tears, not the offspring of despair or death, But gems that Genius sprinkles on his wreath. The Muses, too, my pretfered gifts enhance. Tne charms of music and the graceful dance, And all combine to shed Hope’s lambent ray O’er the dark past and bring a happier day.” Tims speaks the Drama—wc, her vot’rles ask That you will smile propitious on our task— That yon will crown onr efforts with applause. C.ive approbation and espouse our cause, And that unkindness will not come to freeze The efforts the poor actor makes to please. The piece selected for the occasion, the Comedy of London Assurance Is not well snited for an opening night when everybody about the stage is new and untried, and the actors are not expected to feel per fectiy at ease, either with each other, or with the au dience, or is lt a play adopted to strongly impress a stranger public, or afford a favorable opportunity for the developement of tlic talent of a dramatic com panv. The .comedy, however, was well east, and as u whole was performed in a very satisfactory manner. S.r llarcourt Courtly found a very successful repre sentative m Mr. Theodore Hamilton, whose persona tion of the posse west-end m m of Fashion was a very finished piece of acting, scarcely at all overdone, except perhaps that In calling his vallct, he was a little too eo-o-o-01, and In his flirtation seen with Lady Gay, he may have a little too much the •’ re worse” as Capt. Cuttle would say. But these are matters of taste, and wc are not disposed to criticise any gentleman's personation of such a characature of humanity to which there is nothing really natural to portray. Mr. Harm ton is an actor of pleasing presence, with a line voice, and all the requisites for an affective delineator of a wide range of charac ters. Miss Isadora Cameron as Grace Harkawny made a very favorable Impression. Her 3tylc is natural aud modestly feminine, with a dash of freshness which Induced us to suspect that she either eschews mannerism or has uot vet been long enough upon the stage to acquire that too common fault. With a graceful person, pleasing and expressive fa e, she unites correct elocution aud distinct enunciation. Her description of morning In the country was ren dered with exquisite taste If we mistake not this young lady will achieve high position as a com biedlenne. " rioting up Os tne Government Repair Shop—Uitehargeof a large number of Operatives, Ou Saturday afternoon last over one hundred me chanics and laborers, employed la the Marine and Engineer Works, Eastern Wharves, were discharged by order or Lt. CoL Carling, Chief Q. M. A few oper* atlves are retained for the present. In about one month the entire establishment will be closed and all repairs on Government vessels will be done by private contract, or at the Government Works at Port Royal, 8. C. We understand that Mr. Edward Slater, for a long period the efficient and faithful superintendent, has been ordered to Galveston, Texas, for the purpose of superintending the erection and putting In opera tion of extensive repair works contemplated by the Government at that place. The men discharged from the works here ou Sat urday, were the machinists, carpenters, blacksmiths, copper-smiths and tin-smiths, riggers, caulkers and boiler makers ; excepting those now employed on the repairs of the “Standisli,” “Starlight” and "Lou is!) urgin' ’ Savannah and Ooeschee CaSaX.— We are grati fied in being able to state that about the latter part oltlils week the canal will be open from the Savan nah to Little Ogeechoe river. All the locks have been repaired and rebuilt, two paths graded, bars dugout, and breaks in the banks closed. Several flats have proceeded up to the Ogeeehee for wood, of which wo understand a large amount Is cu and oa the banks, awaiting transportation. There Is also a large amount of timber cat, and formed Into rafts to come through the oannl. We regie: to learn that all the iron work on the gates of the various locks had been stolen, and that In removing lt from the wood-work, the gates were in many In stances entirely destroyed. Another great Injury sustained by the canal was the work of fishermen, who cut the bunks and drained the basins In order to catch fish. Several thousand dollars have been expended on the work, and Mr. George Callery, under whose supervision the repairs have been made, has no doubt done full Justice to the Company. Mr. Francis Blair Acting President, in the absjpce of Mr. Edward Lovell, lias pushed the work-rtSpldly forward. We hope by Friday next to announce the opening of the canal to the ogeeehee. There Is a draught of from three to three and a half feet of water through Its entire length. Retence service. —The U. S. Revenue steamer Ketrankee. Capt. W. C. We notice that great activity prevails among the white fireman of savannah, and the various com panies are working In harmony with each ether. Tnt Reconstruction or the Atlantic * Gtlf Railroad.— By the arrival yesterday afternoon of the schooner May, Capt. Kelly, from Sew York, the Atlantic S Gttlf Railroad received 262 tons railroad Iron. Messrs. Callahan and Spratt, tire contractors f>r rebuilding the road from Savannah to the Altr maha, are progressing With the same la a favorable manner considering the want of labor, materials and the bad weather. ' fill ATTENTION is called to the sale of Government property which commences thla morning at 1054 o'clock "at the Corral on Reynolds street.
