Last evening between six and seven o’clock the Exchange bell sounded an alarm of fire. Our fire men were promptly out with their apparatus, a - the alarm waa so imperfectly given it tyi. Impossible for the firemen to determine the where abouts or the scene of conflagration, one of onr reporters, however, being on the alert, discovered what appeared to be a large fire In the southern portion of the city. Arriving upon the ground he ascertained the fact that the 4th C. S. Cavalry Com panies A. and B. under the command of Lleaf. Web ster, w'.to a few days siuce arrived In this city and had encamped In Oglethorpe Town, were about tak ing np the line of march for Augusta. The command hod hult two huge fires lor the purpose of cooking rations. The names were ob served by the steepleman, and he gar. gave the alarm, calling out the yhole fire Depart ment. Much confusion among the firemen Was caused by District One being sounded from the Pres brterian Church steeple, showing a lamentable state of Ignorance of regulations somewhere tF.RONE T3 STATEMENT IN REBARB TO THE GOV IK.NUEM Machine Wokzs at Savannah.—a corres pondent of the Sew York Herald, writing -from Pori Royal, S. C-, In speaking of the C. 8- Army machine works at St. Helena Island, makes the statement that, "the principal repairs for Charleston, Savannah, Beaufort and the coast of Georgia and Florida have to lie done here." As regards the repairs for Savau nah, we are informed that this ls_ so far from the truth as that instead of Savannah repairs being done at St. Helena, much work sent from St. Helena has been done in addition to the work regularly belonging to the repair shop here. We are glad to he aide to make an an hori tative correction of ihc above statement, calculated as it is to reflect upon the usefulness of what has been one of the most Important institutions in this military district. cemetery reports.
