Her Lower Because He Refuses *0 Marry Her—Lore, Jealousy ami Hemorst--The Lady’s Confession. A-e. [Prom the Richmond (Va.i Times, Sept. 23.) About eleven o’clock on Friday night Mr. R. H. Meade, of this city, but tbrnicrly of Alexandria, was shot nearly in front of Me tropolitan Hall, by Mrs. Isabel fluid. Both parties liad for some time previous been engaged in conducting a drinking saloon in the second 9tory of a building opposite where the difficulty occurred, and, it is said, had been living on every intimate terms. The ball from the weapon used entered the back t) the left of the spinal column, and. ranging forward, lodged in the body, where it re mained up to our latest information. Immediately upon beuriug the report of the pistol, policeman .James Jones, of the Twelfth i.’nit.ed States, and a private watchman hast ened towards, the parties, Jones catching the wounded man and the watchman seizing Mrs Ojld by the elbow from behiud, while a third party disarmed her of the pistol. When Meade ins overtaken by tlie police he was snooping down to pick up a brick to throw at his assailant, believing that siie intended to fire other barrels of the pistol at him.— The policeman then turned Meade over to the private watchman ami one or two 01 her persons, who took him to the office of Drs. Tucker & White under the Exchange Hotel, where his wound was examined and properly , dressed. Policeman .Tones look Mrs. Otild in custody, and told her she must go with him to the Chief of Police, to which she re plied that he might take her where lie chose : but before doing so lie went with her t<> her place of business, in order that she might lock it. up, after which they started down in he Chief ’s office. On the way she begged to see Meade, and was taken into his presence, where a most affecting scene ensued. Rush ing forward she threw her arms around his neck, and, with passionate kisses, called up on him to forgive her for what she had done, alleging that his refusal to marry her had run tier wild and forced her to the deed. Meade, ithough suffering from pain, partially re 1 timed the caresses of the wretched woman, ud murmured, “ Ido lorgivo you ; but oh ! zai, why. why did you shoot tire? Yon say I've ruined you, and now you’ve tiied to de stroy me." Obtaining liis forgiveness she gave him one long, deep toned kiss, and then, with remarkable composure, turned round and remarked to the policeman, “ 1 am now ready He has forgiven me, and I • are not what will be done with me. Oh ! would to God that I had killed myself!" She remained in the cage all night, and on Satur • day was taken before Colonel McEntee, Pro vost Judge; hut owing to the inability of the wounded man to be present, the trial was postponed for one mouth, and the prisoner committed to Castle Thunder, in default ot bail in the sum of $ 1,000 for her appearance. Many conflicting rumors being in circula tion about the circumstances which led to the occurrence, in company with another re porter we sought an interview with Mrs. Onld, from whom the following statement was obtained • About seven years since I • ame to Richmond from England: have lieen married, but am now" a widow. Mr. Meade left Alexandria about three years since. I formed his acquaintance soon after lie came here ; became very much attached 10 him, and agreed to marry him, both of us swearing upon the Bible' that we would never marry any other The restaurant is mine, but the license was taken out in his name. I kept nothing from him, and was willing that he'should lune the last cent I had, believing that he would be my husband. While he w’as on a visit to Alexandria, about three weeks after the evacuation, I was for the first time iufornred by some female ac quaintances that he had proven false to me and was about beinir "married to Miss 11., a young girl living in Manchester. My wed ding clothes have already been bought When be returned home I found out from him that what-I bad beard was true, and worn that time we have often quarrelled.— imding that 1 could notwin him back, I became reconciled to giviug him up, and oeiDg willing to make biin happy, had made op my mind to turn over to him my business and all 1 was worth, intending to leave the cr;y, that be might be happy. He was to be married to Miss ri. on Monday night, the ~j • ni £ht (Friday) we had a quarrel, and he left me iu a bad humor to go to Man chester. I followed him out into the street and begged him to go back with me up stairs, as I should be wretched if we parted bad lriends. He refused to go and started down the street w hen I became wild and shot him. 1 'i‘ and , n °T know w - al } was ll<liu k till, just as 1 fired, I was recalled to mv senses hv bis saying, ‘Oh ! Izzi, don’t shoot me." Point mg to a bruise on her forehead, she said that she bad been told that it was caused by a brick which Meade had thrown t„ prevent her from shooting him again. During the whole of our interview the unfortunate woman was wringing tier hands in me Z , despairing manner, exclaiming that she Oi l not want to hurt him, knew he would i t appear against her. was very anxious to P( '‘ him again before he was taken to his swe.o heart s, in Manchester, as she feared o, e would not be permitted to see him there ' From another source we were informed that Meade, after he was shot, e*ated that he was passing by the restaurant which they had been keeping, on Friday night when Mrs. Ould stopped him, and asked him where he was going. He told her that he whs going to Manchester; that lie coaid not mar ry her, but should marry Miss 11., of Man- I euester, on Monday night. lie then started off, whereupon Mrs. Ould shot him. Mrs. Ould is a woman of about thirty years of age, quite good looking, hut with a countenance and eyes which indicate the most, devoted affection for those she loved or deadly hatred towards any one who she con ceived had injured her. Meade is about thirty-three years of age, and is said to fine looking; His injuries are of a very’ seri ous character, thougd not necessarily ratal.
